There is a moment every beginner editor recognises. The cuts are on the beat, the shots are well chosen, and yet the edit feels choppy — as if the video were assembled from separate blocks rather than flowing as one scene. Nine times out of ten the problem is not the picture. It is that every audio cut lands at exactly the same frame as the picture cut.

Professional editors avoid that by letting sound and image change at different moments. The two most common ways of doing it are called the J-cut and the L-cut, and once you see them you cannot unsee them.

Where the names come from

The names describe the shape the clips form on the timeline when video sits above audio.

  • J-cut: the audio of the next shot starts before its picture. The remaining audio block extends leftward beneath the previous video, drawing the hook of a letter J.
  • L-cut: the audio of the current shot continues after its picture has been replaced. The audio block extends rightward under the next video, drawing the foot of a letter L.

Both are known collectively as split edits, because the audio and video cut points are split apart instead of stacked on top of each other.

Why they work

Hearing and seeing are processed differently. In everyday life you usually hear something before you turn to look at it: a door opens, a voice speaks, a car approaches. Your eyes follow your ears. A J-cut reproduces that natural order, so the viewer arrives at the new shot already prepared for it.

The L-cut does the opposite favour. By holding the previous sound over the new image, it tells the audience that the scene has not ended — only the point of view has changed. The two shots remain glued together as a single continuous moment.

There is also a purely technical benefit. A hard cut in audio produces an abrupt change in room tone, background noise and reverb. Overlapping the tracks hides that jump, which is why split edits sound cleaner even when the viewer cannot say why.

How to make one, step by step

The workflow is nearly identical across editing software, whether you use Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut, Shotcut or CapCut. The vocabulary changes, the logic does not.

  1. Place both clips on the timeline with a normal straight cut between them, and make sure the edit already works in terms of picture.
  2. Unlink the audio from the video on the clip you want to adjust. Most programs have an “unlink” or “detach audio” command; some let you drag the audio edge while holding a modifier key.
  3. Drag the audio edit point earlier or later than the video edit point. Moving the incoming audio to the left creates a J-cut; extending the outgoing audio to the right creates an L-cut.
  4. Choose the overlap length. Half a second to two seconds covers most dialogue situations. Longer overlaps feel more deliberate and are useful for scene transitions.
  5. Add short audio fades at the new boundaries so the background noise blends instead of popping.
  6. Re-link or group the clips so later trimming does not accidentally break the offset you just built.

Choosing where to cut

The most reliable place to hide a split edit is a natural pause in speech: the gap between sentences, a breath, or the beat before a question is answered. Cutting in the middle of a word almost always draws attention to itself.

A practical trick is to edit with your eyes closed for one pass. Listening to the audio alone reveals bumps in room tone and awkward rhythm that the picture tends to disguise.

Common mistakes

  • Overusing them. If every single cut in a sequence is split, the technique stops being invisible. Straight cuts still have their place, especially for deliberate impact.
  • Forgetting room tone. If one clip was recorded in a quiet room and the next in a noisy one, the overlap makes the mismatch more obvious, not less. Record a few seconds of ambience on location to patch these gaps.
  • Letting the offset break during trimming. Unlinked clips are easy to nudge by accident. Group them once you are satisfied.
  • Ignoring the mix. When two audio sources overlap, both are audible. Lower one of them slightly so the dialogue stays clear.

A short exercise

Take a two-minute conversation you have already edited with straight cuts and rebuild it using split edits everywhere the speaker changes. Export both versions and watch them back to back. The difference is usually dramatic, and it is the fastest way to internalise the technique — far faster than reading about it.
