You set up a simple still life — a mug, a book, a piece of fruit — and draw it carefully. When you step back, something is wrong. The mug is too tall, the handle sticks out at an impossible angle, the whole thing leans. You can see that it’s off, but you can’t say why.
This is the single most common frustration among beginners, and it is almost never a hand problem. It is a looking problem. Your hand can already make the marks you need. What gets in the way is a brain that insists on drawing what it knows instead of what is in front of it.
Why your brain sabotages the drawing
Human vision is built for recognition, not measurement. When you look at a mug, your brain identifies “mug” almost instantly and hands you a stored symbol: a rounded container with a circular opening and a loop on the side. That symbol is useful for navigating the world and useless for drawing, because it ignores the specific angle, foreshortening and proportion of this mug seen from this position.
So the beginner draws a perfectly round ellipse for the rim even though, from eye level, the opening is a narrow sliver. The symbol wins over the observation. Every technique below exists for one reason: to interrupt that symbol and force you to see shapes, angles and relationships instead.
Sighting: measuring with a pencil
Sighting is the classic method for comparing sizes and angles by holding a pencil at arm’s length. It looks theatrical, but it works, and it works for a concrete reason: it converts a three-dimensional scene into flat, comparable measurements.
To measure proportion:
- Hold your pencil at arm’s length, arm fully straight, and keep it that way every single time. If your elbow bends, the measurement changes.
- Close one eye. Two eyes give you two slightly different views and no stable reading.
- Align the tip of the pencil with one edge of the object and slide your thumb down the pencil until it lines up with the other edge.
- Keeping your thumb in place, rotate or move the pencil to compare that length against another part of the scene.
The output is a ratio, not a number in centimetres: “the mug is one and a half heads tall”, “the book is three mug-widths long”. Ratios are what transfer correctly to paper at any size.
For angles, hold the pencil so it visually overlaps the edge you want to draw, then — without rotating your wrist — bring it down to the paper and copy that tilt. Comparing the angle against true vertical and true horizontal makes it easier to judge.
Negative space: draw the gaps instead
Negative space is the shape of the empty area around and between objects — the triangle of background trapped between a mug handle and its body, the gap under a chair seat, the space between two leaves.
These shapes are enormously useful because your brain has no stored symbol for them. There is no “correct” idea of what the gap under a chair should look like, so you are forced to observe it honestly. And here is the key: if every negative shape is accurate, the positive shapes between them are accurate by definition. You cannot draw all the gaps correctly and end up with a wrong object.
A practical exercise: set up an object with lots of holes and gaps — a wicker basket, a bicycle, a chair — and draw only the background shapes. Shade them in and leave the object as blank paper. Most people are startled by how accurate the result is compared to their usual work.
Big shapes first, details last
Starting with an eyelash or a mug handle feels productive and almost guarantees a distorted drawing. Once a detail is committed to paper, everything else has to accommodate it, and errors compound.
A more reliable order of operations:

Draw the early stages lightly. Faint lines invite correction; heavy lines feel permanent and make you defend a mistake instead of fixing it.
Checking your own work
The same brain that distorted the drawing will also refuse to see the distortion, because it has been staring at the same image for an hour. These tricks reset your perception:
- Mirror it. Hold the drawing up to a mirror, or flip a photo of it. Errors that were invisible jump out immediately.
- Turn it upside down. This defeats symbol recognition entirely and leaves only shapes.
- Step back. Distance compresses the image and reveals problems with the overall mass.
- Squint. Blurring the image removes detail and shows you whether the large light and dark areas read correctly.
- Check a plumb line. Hold the pencil truly vertical against a landmark and see what else falls along that line. Do the same horizontally.
A short daily practice
Observation improves faster with short, frequent sessions than with occasional long ones. A twenty-minute routine that covers the essentials:
- Five minutes of blind contour. Draw an object without looking at the paper at all. The result will be a mess; that is not the point. It trains your eye to travel slowly along an edge.
- Five minutes of negative space. One object with gaps, background shapes only.
- Ten minutes of measured drawing. One simple object, using sighting for proportions and building from envelope to detail.
Keep the drawings in one sketchbook and date them. Progress in observational drawing is real but gradual, and it is much easier to believe when you can flip back three months.
