Around 1200 BCE, a group of civilisations that had traded, corresponded and fought with each other for centuries stopped functioning within the space of a few decades. Cities burned or were abandoned, palace bureaucracies disappeared, and in some regions the ability to write vanished entirely. Historians call this the Late Bronze Age Collapse, and it remains one of the most debated episodes in ancient history.

The world that collapsed

To understand the scale of what happened, you first have to appreciate how connected the Eastern Mediterranean had become by the thirteenth century BCE. This was not a scattering of isolated kingdoms. It was a network.

The major players included:

  • Egypt under the New Kingdom, the wealthiest and most durable of them all.
  • The Hittite Empire in Anatolia, Egypt’s great rival and eventual treaty partner.
  • Mycenaean Greece, a set of palace-centred kingdoms with a writing system now known as Linear B.
  • Assyria and Babylonia in Mesopotamia.
  • Coastal trading cities such as Ugarit on the Syrian coast, hubs where goods and letters from across the region passed through.

These states exchanged ambassadors, arranged royal marriages and traded metals, textiles, oil and grain. Crucially, bronze itself depended on that trade: it is an alloy of copper and tin, and tin in particular had to be carried over long distances. A civilisation that ran on bronze tools and weapons was, by definition, a civilisation that depended on international supply lines.

What actually happened

Over roughly the period between 1200 and 1150 BCE, that system came apart.

The Greek case is particularly striking. After the palaces fell, the region entered a long period sometimes called the Greek Dark Age. Monumental building stopped, populations appear to have declined, and literacy was lost for centuries. When writing returned to Greece, it came back in a completely different form, adapted from the Phoenician alphabet rather than revived from Linear B.

The Sea Peoples

Egyptian records from the reign of Ramesses III describe battles against a coalition of seaborne and land-based groups whom modern scholars call the Sea Peoples. Egyptian inscriptions present them as a confederation that had already destroyed several states before reaching Egypt’s borders.

For a long time the Sea Peoples were treated as the cause of the collapse. That view has softened considerably. The problem is that almost everything known about them comes from Egyptian propaganda inscriptions, which had every reason to portray a triumphant pharaoh facing an overwhelming enemy. Their origins are disputed, and it is entirely possible that they were themselves refugees — a symptom of the collapse rather than its engine.

The leading explanations

No single cause has convinced everyone. The main candidates each have real evidence behind them.

Climate and drought

Environmental studies of pollen and sediment cores from the region point to a period of drier conditions around this time. Correspondence from the era includes urgent requests for grain shipments, which is consistent with food shortages. For agricultural states with limited reserves, sustained crop failure is a serious threat.

Earthquakes

The Eastern Mediterranean is seismically active, and some sites show damage patterns consistent with earthquakes. The difficulty is that earthquakes are local events. They can explain the destruction of a particular city, but not the simultaneous failure of an entire regional system.

Internal breakdown

Bronze Age palace economies were highly centralised. The palace collected, stored and redistributed goods, and it recorded everything. Systems like that are efficient but brittle: if the centre fails, there is often no alternative structure ready to take over. Some historians argue for internal revolt or elite collapse, with ordinary people abandoning a system that had stopped delivering.

Trade disruption

Since bronze required imported tin, any interruption to long-distance trade had immediate military and economic consequences. Once one node of the network fell, its trading partners lost access to goods they could not produce locally, which put pressure on them in turn.

Systems collapse: the synthesis

The explanation that most historians now favour does not choose between these causes. It argues that they compounded one another. Drought reduces harvests. Reduced harvests create hunger and unrest. Unrest and shortage disrupt trade. Disrupted trade cuts off the tin supply. Weakened states become vulnerable to raiding. Raiding displaces populations, who move and put pressure on neighbouring states, and the cycle continues.

In this reading, the very interconnection that made the Late Bronze Age prosperous is what made its failure so complete. A network in which every node depends on the others transmits shocks efficiently in both directions.

What came afterwards

The collapse cleared the ground for a very different world. Large centralised empires gave way, for a time, to smaller polities. Iron gradually replaced bronze as the dominant metal for tools and weapons — partly because iron ore is far more widely available than tin, and therefore far less dependent on long-distance trade.

New peoples and new political forms emerged in the following centuries, including the Phoenician trading cities whose alphabet would eventually spread across the Mediterranean and shape most Western writing systems.

Why historians keep returning to it

The Bronze Age Collapse is studied so intensely partly because the evidence is genuinely incomplete and partly because the questions it raises are not confined to antiquity. How does a complex, interconnected system fail? Does resilience come from connection or from redundancy? Can a society that depends on distant supply chains absorb a shock to those chains?

Those are useful questions to hold in mind, though it is worth resisting neat parallels. The ancient world differed from ours in almost every respect that matters, and history rarely repeats as cleanly as we would like.
