Almost every piano student hits the same wall: scales sound fine until the thumb has to pass under the hand, and then there is a bump. A tiny hesitation, an accent where none belongs, a note that speaks louder than its neighbours. This article explains why standard fingerings exist, what actually happens in the thumb-under motion, and how to practice it so the bump disappears.
Why fingering is not arbitrary
A hand has five fingers. A scale has seven notes before it repeats. That mismatch is the entire problem. Somewhere in every octave, the hand must reset its position, and the only way to do that without lifting off the keys is to pass the thumb underneath the other fingers, or to cross a finger over the thumb.
Standard fingerings are the solutions that generations of pianists converged on because they satisfy three constraints at once:
- The thumb avoids black keys. The thumb is short and sits low; placing it on a raised black key forces the wrist to lift and the hand to twist.
- Crossings happen at convenient places. They are positioned so that the hand lands ready for the next group of notes rather than stretched to its limit.
- The pattern repeats. A fingering you can loop octave after octave is one your hands can eventually automate.
The default pattern: 1-2-3-1-2-3-4
For most major scales, the right hand ascending uses fingers 1-2-3, then thumb again on the fourth note, then 1-2-3-4 to reach the octave. The left hand ascending mirrors it: 5-4-3-2-1, then 3-2-1. Descending, each hand simply reverses its own pattern.
The logic is that the hand works in two groups — a group of three fingers and a group of four — separated by a thumb crossing. Once you internalise the grouping instead of memorising seven separate numbers, most scales become far easier to recall.

Notice the pattern in F major: because B flat is a black key, the thumb crossing shifts so the thumb never lands on it. That single principle explains most of the “irregular” fingerings that look confusing at first glance.
What the thumb actually does
The phrase “thumb under” is slightly misleading. If you try to literally tuck the thumb far beneath a stationary hand, you will strain the joint and produce a lurch. What good players do is closer to a small, continuous shift of the whole arm.
Break it into three simultaneous elements:
- Early preparation. The thumb starts moving toward its next key as soon as it releases the previous one — not at the last moment. By the time finger 3 plays, the thumb is already hovering over its target.
- Forearm travel. The elbow and forearm drift gently in the direction of the scale. The hand is carried to the new position rather than reaching for it.
- A slight rotation. The forearm rotates a few degrees, lifting the outside of the hand just enough to give the thumb clearance without contorting it.
When those three happen together, there is nothing to “tuck.” The thumb simply arrives where it needs to be.
Five exercises that fix the bump
1. Silent crossing
Place your hand on the keys and move only the thumb to its crossing position, repeatedly, without pressing any key. Watch the wrist. If it jerks or the knuckles collapse, slow down until the motion looks calm. You are training the shape, not the sound.
2. Three-note cells
Play only the notes surrounding the crossing — the note before it, the thumb note, and the note after — as a loop. Isolating three notes lets you repeat the difficult moment dozens of times per minute instead of once per octave.
3. Rhythmic variation
Play the scale in dotted rhythms: long-short, long-short. Then reverse it: short-long. Uneven rhythms force different fingers to carry the weight and expose which ones are lagging. Return to even notes afterwards and the improvement is usually audible immediately.
4. Groups with stops
Play four notes quickly, stop and hold, then the next four quickly. The pause gives you time to notice whether your hand landed in a comfortable position or a strained one. Gradually shorten the stops until they vanish.
5. Dynamic control
Play the whole scale as quietly as you possibly can while still producing sound. Quiet playing removes the option of using force to paper over uneven motion. Any bump becomes obvious.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until the last second to move the thumb. The single most common cause of an audible gap.
- Twisting the wrist sideways. The wrist should stay roughly aligned with the forearm. Excess sideways bending both slows you down and risks strain.
- Practising only ascending. Descending crossings use a different motion — a finger passing over the thumb — and need their own attention.
- Speeding up too early. If a scale is uneven at a slow tempo, playing it faster only hides the unevenness behind the blur.
- Ignoring the left hand. Because the left hand crossings fall in different places, many students unconsciously practise the right hand twice as much.
How much scale practice is enough
Scales are a means, not an end. Ten focused minutes a day on one or two scales will do more than half an hour of running through all of them on autopilot. A workable routine looks like this: one scale hands separately with attention to the crossing, the same scale hands together slowly, and finally the same scale a little faster while keeping the sound even.
The payoff shows up in repertoire. Scale passages appear constantly in classical pieces, in jazz improvisation, and in pop fills. Once the crossing motion is automatic, your attention is free for the things that actually make music interesting: phrasing, dynamics and timing.
