You follow the pattern exactly. You measure carefully, you sew neatly. And the finished skirt still twists around your legs, or the neckline gapes, or one side hangs longer than the other. Before blaming your stitching, check something more basic: which direction you cut the fabric.
Woven fabric is not a neutral sheet of material. It behaves differently depending on the direction you pull it, and that difference is one of the most powerful tools in sewing — or one of the most frustrating problems, if you ignore it.
How woven fabric is built
A woven fabric is made of two sets of threads crossing at right angles on a loom:
- Warp threads run the length of the fabric, parallel to the finished edges. They are held under tension during weaving, so they are typically stronger and more tightly packed.
- Weft threads run across the width, passing over and under the warp.
Those tightly finished edges running down both long sides of the fabric are the selvages. They do not fray, and they are your permanent reference point: the selvage always runs parallel to the lengthwise grain.
The three directions that matter

You can feel all three with a simple test. Take a scrap of woven fabric and tug it along the selvage: almost no give. Tug it across the width: a little more. Now tug it diagonally: it stretches noticeably and the edges start to curl. That diagonal is the bias, and it is where the fabric comes alive.
Why the bias stretches
Nothing about the threads themselves changes on the diagonal. What changes is geometry.
Pulling along the grain means pulling directly on threads, and threads barely stretch. Pulling on the diagonal means pulling on the grid those threads form. The square structure shears into a diamond shape, and that shearing gives — a lot. It is the same reason a square bookshelf without a diagonal brace can rack sideways while a braced one cannot.
This has a practical consequence sewists learn quickly: bias-cut pieces get longer and narrower as they hang. That is why a bias skirt should hang for a day or more before you hem it, and why bias necklines and armholes stretch out if you handle them roughly.
The grainline arrow on your pattern
That long double-headed arrow printed on each pattern piece is not decoration. It tells you exactly how the piece must sit on the fabric, and the designer chose its angle deliberately.
The correct method is precise and takes thirty seconds:
- Place the pattern piece roughly where you want it.
- Measure from one end of the grainline arrow to the selvage. Note the distance.
- Measure from the other end of the arrow to the same selvage.
- Pivot the piece until both measurements are identical, then pin.
Eyeballing it is where most grain problems begin. A few degrees off may look fine flat on the table and reveal itself only when the garment is worn — as a side seam that spirals toward the front, or a hem that dips.
What goes wrong when the grain is off
- Twisting. Trouser legs and sleeves rotate around the limb. This is the classic symptom of an off-grain cut.
- Uneven hems. Different parts of the hem sit at different grain angles and drop by different amounts.
- Distorted seams. A grain edge sewn to a bias edge fights itself and ripples.
- Poor recovery. The garment sags at stress points and never returns to shape.
These faults cannot be pressed out or altered away. They are built into the cut.
Straightening fabric before you cut
Fabric often arrives off-grain from rolling, folding and finishing. Two habits prevent most trouble.
Find a true crosswise edge. On many plain wovens you can snip into the selvage and tear across — the tear follows a single weft thread perfectly. On fabrics that do not tear well, pull one crosswise thread free and cut along the line it leaves.
Check the corners. Fold the fabric selvage to selvage. If the cut ends do not line up and the corners are not square, the grain is skewed. Gentle diagonal tugging and careful pressing will usually bring it back.
Prewashing matters too. Most shrinkage happens along the lengthwise grain, so a garment cut from unwashed fabric can change proportion after its first laundering.
Using the bias on purpose
Bias is not only a hazard — it is a design choice. Cutting a dress on the bias lets it skim the body and fall in soft, fluid folds that a straight-grain cut simply cannot produce.
It is also indispensable for finishing curves. Bias binding and bias facings can be eased smoothly around a neckline or armhole without puckering, precisely because the strip can stretch and compress along its length. Straight-grain strips cannot do this.
Working with bias asks for patience: handle pieces gently, avoid stretching them while sewing, use a longer stitch, and let the garment hang before hemming.
A quick checklist
- Identify the selvages before you unfold anything else.
- Straighten the fabric and prewash if the fiber requires it.
- Measure both ends of every grainline arrow to the selvage.
- Respect any piece marked “cut on bias” — the designer chose that for a reason.
- Handle bias edges lightly and stay-stitch curves that will be handled a lot.
Grain is one of those fundamentals that separates garments that look homemade from garments that look made. Once you start reading fabric direction automatically, a whole category of mysterious fitting problems simply stops happening.
