Unlock the fretboard with a free guitar theory course: master scales, modes, chords and progressions to write, improvise and play with confidence.

In this free course, learn about

  • Identify and apply guitar intervals, octave/unison locations, and B-string tuning adjustments
  • Use the musical alphabet and build major scales via W-W-H-W-W-W-H with interval names
  • Navigate 7 major scale patterns; distinguish patterns vs positions and gain fretboard insight
  • Determine key from the major-scale root; construct sharp keys and locate added sharps
  • Build and move triads (maj/min/dim/aug), their inversions, and open vs close triads
  • Harmonize the major scale into diatonic triads/7ths; know where diminished intervals occur
  • Construct 7th chords (esp. V7); play close, shell, drop2, drop3, and drop2&4 voicings
  • Analyze chord progressions: I-IV-V, chord families, voice leading, slash/borrowed/secondary doms
  • Understand relative minor, modulation, and how dominant 7ths reveal function and key center
  • Define modes from the major scale; build modes in series/parallel and alter intervals (Dorian, Lydian etc.)
  • Solo with modes over chords: diatonic mapping (e.g., 1-6-2-5), modal vamps, non-diatonic cases
  • Use major/minor pentatonics, blues scale, mode-pentatonics, and pentatonic superimposition
  • Solo with arpeggios and target chord tones (strong landing tones) over common 7th chords
  • Build and apply melodic/harmonic minor, diminished, whole-tone scales and their common harmonizations

Course Description

If you can play shapes but still feel unsure about what the notes mean, this free online course helps you turn guitar technique into real musical understanding. Instead of memorizing disconnected patterns, you’ll learn the logic that links intervals, the musical alphabet, and octave and unison relationships across the fretboard so you can locate sounds on purpose and hear what you’re playing before your fingers move.

From there, the course builds the major scale as a practical map for classical guitar and beyond. You’ll see how keys are constructed, how sharps and scale degrees function, and how scale patterns differ from positions so your navigation stays consistent anywhere on the neck. That foundation makes harmony feel less like a mystery and more like a toolkit: you’ll connect major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads, explore inversions, and understand how chord quality changes when the shapes move across string sets, including the unique adjustment around the B string.

As you progress, you’ll develop a strong grasp of diatonic harmony and chord progressions, learning to recognize the role of I, IV and V, identify the key of a song, and choose voicings that create smooth voice leading. You’ll expand into seventh chords, drop voicings and shell voicings, building richer textures while keeping the guitar playable and clear. The course also strengthens your modern harmony vocabulary with suspended chords, power chords, slash chords, borrowed chords, secondary dominants, blues movement, and modulation, so you can analyze music and create progressions that sound intentional.

Modes, pentatonics, arpeggios, and additional scale families are integrated as musical solutions, not isolated theory. You’ll understand how modes relate to the major scale, how to apply them over different chord types, and how to target strong chord tones while soloing. By the end, you should be able to interpret chord symbols, craft progressions, and improvise with a clearer ear and a more informed fretboard—skills that translate directly into better practice, better arranging, and more confident performance.
