Course Description

Knowing what to do in the first critical minutes of an emergency can protect life, reduce harm, and bring calm to a stressful situation. This free online basic first aid course is designed to help you act with clarity and confidence when someone is injured or suddenly unwell at home, at work, or in public. Instead of guessing, you will learn a structured approach to first aid so you can quickly assess risk, choose the safest next step, and communicate effectively with emergency services.

You will build strong foundations by understanding what first aid is, what the priorities are, and how to prepare. A well-stocked first aid kit is only useful if you know what belongs in it and when to use each item, so the course connects practical preparation with real-world decision-making. You will also learn how to carry out a primary survey, using a clear sequence to check danger, responsiveness, airway and breathing, and then move into a secondary survey to look for injuries, medical alerts, or signs that something is worsening.

Cardiac emergencies are covered in a way that helps you take action quickly. You will learn adult, child, and infant CPR techniques, what to do when someone is not breathing, and how an automated external defibrillator works, including considerations for pediatric pads. The course also explains the chain of survival, helping you understand how early recognition, high-quality CPR, defibrillation, and aftercare fit together in an effective response.

Breathing and airway problems are addressed with clear guidance for choking in adults, children, and babies, including what to do when initial steps do not work and when to escalate. You will also explore common emergency situations such as seizures, burns and scalds, harmful swallowed objects, heart conditions, and stroke recognition using the FAST test. Finally, you will learn supportive first aid skills such as placing someone in the recovery position and applying a sling appropriately. With short video lessons and quick checks to reinforce learning, this course helps you develop a dependable emergency-response mindset you can use when it matters most.
