Questions also cover payroll registers, federal reporting forms, internal controls, benefit costs, remittances, and payroll bank reconciliation. Practical calculations and visual accounting records help reinforce the accurate recognition, payment, and reporting of employee compensation.

Regular pay is 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime pay is 2 × $30 = $60. Therefore, gross pay is $860.
Net pay is the amount delivered to the employee. It equals gross pay minus employee taxes, benefit deductions, and other authorized withholdings.
Wages expense is recorded at gross pay. The $2,200 withheld is credited to liability accounts, while the remaining $7,800 is credited to Cash as net pay.
Employer payroll tax expense includes the employer's FICA and unemployment taxes: $3,825 + $400 = $4,225. Employee income tax withholding is not an employer expense.
The employer holds the withheld amount temporarily and must remit it to the government. It is therefore recorded as a current liability.
Accrual accounting recognizes wages when employees earn them. The company debits Wages Expense and credits Wages Payable in December.
An accrual is appropriate when the obligation results from past employee service, the benefits vest or accumulate, payment is probable, and the amount can be reasonably estimated.
The employer is temporarily holding money owed to another party. The garnishment is therefore a liability until it is remitted.
A payroll register summarizes gross earnings, deductions, and net pay by employee. Its totals also support payroll journal entries and reconciliation.
Separating authorization, time approval, payroll processing, payment, and reconciliation reduces the risk that one person can create and conceal a fraudulent payment.
Form W-2 reports an employee's annual wages and specified taxes withheld. Form W-4 provides withholding information, while Form 941 is an employer's quarterly return.
Form 941 is the employer's quarterly federal payroll tax return. It generally reports federal income tax withheld and both employee and employer portions of Social Security and Medicare taxes.
An employer match is an additional compensation-related cost. The company debits Employee Benefits Expense and credits Cash or a payable, depending on whether it has been funded.
Cash paid to employees equals gross pay minus employee deductions: $18,000 − $4,100 = $13,900. Employer payroll taxes are additional company costs.
The liability increased by $30,000 and decreased by $28,500. The unpaid amount is therefore a $1,500 credit balance.
Remittance settles amounts already recorded as payable. The employer debits the liability accounts to reduce them and credits Cash for the payment.
Because the bonus relates to current-year service and is probable and estimable, accrual accounting requires recognition of compensation expense and a liability in the current year.
Outstanding checks reduce the adjusted bank balance, while deposits in transit increase it. The adjusted balance is $45,000 − $3,400 + $600 = $42,200.
Total employer labor cost is gross wages plus employer taxes and employer-paid benefits: $80,000 + $6,500 + $4,000 = $90,500. Employee deductions are part of gross wages, not an added cost.
