Handling cash looks simple until a note feels slightly wrong in your hand. Cashiers, bank tellers, shop assistants and market traders all face the same moment: a queue behind the customer, a banknote in front of you, and a few seconds to decide. The good news is that checking money is a learnable skill. Central banks around the world design notes so that anyone can verify them without special equipment, using a method usually summarised as feel, look and tilt.

Why counterfeits are easier to catch than people think

A modern banknote is not just printed paper. It combines several manufacturing technologies that are difficult and expensive to reproduce at the same time. A counterfeiter may imitate one feature convincingly, but almost never all of them. That is why the golden rule of cash handling is simple: never rely on a single check. Verify at least two or three independent features before accepting a note.

The second rule is equally practical: compare. If something feels unusual, take a note of the same denomination from your till and put them side by side. Differences in colour, size, sharpness or texture become obvious immediately.

Step 1: Feel the note

Touch is the fastest check and often the most reliable, because it does not depend on lighting conditions.

  • Substrate. Cotton-based banknote paper is crisp and slightly rough, quite unlike ordinary office paper, which feels soft and limp. Polymer notes feel smooth, thin and springy, and they snap back when flexed.
  • Raised print. Many notes are printed using an intaglio process that leaves ink slightly above the surface. Run a fingernail lightly across the main portrait, the large numeral or the lettering: you should feel texture, not a flat surface.
  • Tactile marks. Several currencies include raised lines, dots or shapes near the edges so that blind and partially sighted users can identify denominations by touch.

Very worn notes lose some of this texture, which is normal. A note that is crisp and new-looking but completely flat to the touch, however, deserves a second look.

Step 2: Look at the note against the light

Hold the note up to a light source. Several features only appear in transmitted light, and they are among the hardest to fake convincingly.

Also examine the printing quality itself. Genuine notes have extremely fine, sharp lines, and microprinting that stays legible under a magnifier. Counterfeits often show fuzzy edges, blurred portraits, or microtext that turns into an unreadable smudge.

Step 3: Tilt the note

Optical features change appearance with the viewing angle, which is impossible to reproduce with a standard printer or photocopier.

  • Colour-shifting ink. A numeral or emblem changes colour as you rotate the note, for example from green to blue or from gold to green.
  • Holograms and foil patches. Tilting reveals moving images, changing symbols or shifting depth effects.
  • Rolling bars or moving bands. Some designs show a bright band that appears to travel up and down the note as the angle changes.
  • Latent images. A hidden numeral or word that becomes visible only when the note is held almost flat at eye level.

Photocopied or scanned counterfeits usually reproduce these areas as a static, dull grey or silver patch that never changes.

Machines help, but they are not the whole answer

Many businesses use ultraviolet lamps, magnifying glasses or automatic detectors. These tools are genuinely useful, but they have limits:

  • UV lamps reveal fluorescent fibres and printed elements that glow under ultraviolet light, while ordinary paper tends to glow brightly overall. They do not, however, verify texture or optical features.
  • Detector pens react to the starch present in normal paper. They can be fooled if a counterfeit is printed on treated or genuine-paper stock, so they should never be the only test.
  • Automatic validators are efficient in high-volume environments but need regular software updates as new note designs are issued.

Technology supports the human check; it does not replace it. A trained pair of hands remains the fastest first filter at the till.

What to do if a note looks suspicious

This is where professional conduct matters as much as technical knowledge. Most people carrying a counterfeit note have no idea it is fake — they received it as change somewhere else. Accusations create conflict and rarely help.

  1. Stay calm and neutral. Explain that you need to verify the note, without implying wrongdoing.
  2. Follow your employer’s procedure. Every business should have a written cash-handling policy; ask for it if you have not seen one.
  3. Call a supervisor. Decisions about refusing or retaining a note should not fall on a single cashier.
  4. Do not damage or alter the note. It may be needed as evidence.
  5. Report it through the official channel. Rules on what to do with suspect notes differ by country, so follow the guidance of your national authority or central bank.

Building the habit

Checking money well is not about memorising every detail of every denomination. It is about building a quick, consistent routine — feel, look, tilt — and applying it every single time, especially during busy periods when attention drops. Cashiers who handle notes attentively for a few weeks develop an instinct for what a genuine note feels like, and that instinct is what catches the exceptions.
