“Number two on the sides, scissors on top.” Anyone who has sat in a barber’s chair has heard something like it. But ask most clients what a number two actually means in millimetres and you will get a shrug — and ask them what separates a two from a three and the answer is usually “a bit shorter, I think”.
There is a simple, consistent logic behind those numbers. Once you know it, clipper work stops being guesswork, whether you are cutting professionally or trimming your own hair at home.
The rule: eighths of an inch
Clipper guards — also called combs or attachments — were standardised around the imperial inch. The rule is this:
The guard number tells you how many eighths of an inch of hair it leaves behind.
A number 1 leaves one eighth of an inch. A number 4 leaves four eighths — that is, half an inch. A number 8 leaves eight eighths, a full inch. That is the entire system.

Two things are worth noting. First, the increments are not proportional in the way people assume — going from a 3 to a 2 removes about 4 mm, which is a very visible change, while going from a 7 to an 8 changes almost nothing perceptible in a finished style. Second, the numbers are a convention, not a law: lengths vary slightly between manufacturers, so guards from one brand will not always match another exactly.
Guards are not the same as blades
This is where confusion sets in for beginners. There are two different numbering systems in play.
- Guards (attachment combs) clip onto the clipper and lift the hair away from the blade. Numbers run roughly 0.5 to 8, and higher means longer.
- Blades are the cutting mechanism itself. On detachable-blade clippers, blade sizes are labelled differently — 000, 00, 0, 1, 1A, 2, 3¾ and so on — and here higher numbers also mean longer, but the scale is entirely separate and much shorter overall. A 000 blade cuts extremely close to the skin.
So a “number 1 blade” and a “number 1 guard” are not the same thing at all. If a client asks for a number one and you are working with detachable blades, clarify which system they mean.
The taper lever: the in-between settings
Most clippers have a small lever on the side. It does not change the blade — it shifts the cutting blade slightly relative to the fixed blade, which fine-tunes how close the cut is.
Lever fully closed gives the shortest cut that setup allows. Lever fully open lengthens it a little. The practical effect is that each guard gives you a small range rather than a single fixed length — which is exactly what you need for smooth blending.
A common technique: instead of jumping straight from a 1 to a 2, use a 1 with the lever open as an intermediate step. The difference is subtle, and subtlety is the whole point of a good fade.
How a fade is built from guard numbers
A fade is simply a controlled progression from very short at the bottom to longer at the top, with the visible lines between lengths blended away. Expressed in guards, a typical mid fade might look like:
- Bare blade or 0.5 at the lowest section, just above the hairline
- 1 for the next band upward
- 1.5 as a bridging step
- 2 continuing up toward the fade line
- 3 approaching the top section
- Scissors or a longer guard for the top itself
The bands themselves are the easy part. The skill is in the transitions — flicking the clipper outward at the top of each pass so it leaves a soft edge instead of a hard shelf, and then going back with the lever and an open comb to erase whatever lines remain.
Why the same guard gives different results
Two clients, same guard, noticeably different outcomes. That is normal, and the reasons are worth understanding:
- Hair density. Thick hair packed close together stands up more and reads as longer than the same guard on fine hair.
- Hair texture. Tightly coiled hair compresses under the guard and springs back, so it often appears shorter than the stated length.
- Hair colour against skin. Dark hair on light skin shows scalp much more readily; the same length can look “shaved” on one client and “short” on another.
- Angle of approach. Pressing the clipper flat against the scalp cuts closer than rolling it through at an angle.
- Wet or dry. Clipper work is done on dry hair; wet hair stretches and the result is shorter than intended once it dries.
Practical habits that prevent mistakes
- Always start longer than the target. You can remove more; you cannot put it back. If a client asks for “about a 2”, begin with a 3.
- Check the guard is seated properly. A comb that pops loose mid-pass takes out a chunk at bare-blade length.
- Confirm in millimetres, not adjectives. “Short” means wildly different things to different people. “Around 6 mm, like a number 2” is unambiguous.
- Work against the growth direction. Pushing the clipper against the way hair lies gives an even, predictable cut.
- Keep blades clean, oiled and aligned. A dull or misaligned blade pulls hair and cuts inconsistently regardless of which guard is on it.
A small system with a large payoff
Guard numbers are one of those pieces of trade knowledge that take five minutes to learn and immediately change how you work. They turn a vague conversation about “shorter on the sides” into a precise, repeatable plan — and a client who gets the same result twice is a client who comes back.
