Sunscreen is one of the few skincare products almost every dermatologist agrees on, yet the label is full of terms most people never had explained: SPF, broad spectrum, UVA, UVB, mineral, chemical. Understanding what those words actually mean makes it much easier to choose a product that suits your skin and, more importantly, to use it in a way that actually works.
UVA and UVB: two different problems
The sunlight that reaches your skin includes ultraviolet radiation, which is invisible and divided into ranges. The two that matter for skincare are UVA and UVB.
- UVB has shorter wavelengths and mostly affects the outer layers of the skin. It is the main cause of sunburn and plays a major role in skin cancer risk. Its intensity varies a lot with time of day, season and altitude.
- UVA has longer wavelengths and penetrates deeper into the skin. It contributes to premature ageing — loss of elasticity, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation — and also to cancer risk. It is present throughout daylight hours and passes through window glass.
A simple way to remember it: B for burning, A for ageing. Both matter, which is why a good sunscreen has to handle both.
What SPF actually measures
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it is a measure of protection against UVB specifically. It compares how much UV energy is needed to redden protected skin versus unprotected skin. In practical terms, higher SPF means more UVB filtered — but the relationship is not linear, and this is where most misunderstandings start.

Notice that SPF 50 is not “more than three times better” than SPF 15. The jump from 15 to 30 matters more than the jump from 30 to 50, and no sunscreen filters 100% of UV. That is why dermatologists talk about sunscreen as one layer of protection rather than a shield that makes sun exposure risk-free.
Because SPF only describes UVB, you also need to look for the words broad spectrum (or a UVA seal, depending on the country), which indicate that the product protects against UVA as well.
Mineral versus chemical filters
Sunscreens use two broad families of filters, and many modern formulas combine them.
- Mineral (physical) filters — typically zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They sit on the surface and mostly reflect and scatter radiation, while also absorbing part of it. They tend to be well tolerated by sensitive skin and start working immediately, but can leave a white cast.
- Chemical (organic) filters — molecules that absorb UV radiation and release it as a small amount of heat. They are usually lighter, more transparent and more pleasant to wear under makeup, but some people find them more irritating around the eyes.
Neither category is universally “better”. The best sunscreen is the one you find comfortable enough to wear every day, because consistency beats formulation on paper.
The application problem
Here is the part the label rarely explains: the SPF printed on the bottle is measured in laboratory conditions with a generous, standardised amount of product. Most people apply far less than that, which means the real protection they get is considerably lower than the number suggests.
Useful rules of thumb for getting closer to the tested amount:
- Face and neck: roughly two finger-lengths of product squeezed along the index and middle fingers, or about a teaspoon.
- Whole body in swimwear: around a shot-glass worth of sunscreen.
- Apply before going out, so the film has time to settle evenly.
- Reapply roughly every two hours outdoors, and immediately after swimming, heavy sweating or towel drying.
“Water resistant” does not mean waterproof. It means the product keeps a stated level of protection for a limited time in water, after which it needs reapplying.
The spots people forget
Even careful users tend to miss the same areas: the ears, the back and sides of the neck, the hairline and any parting in the hair, the eyelids, the lips (a lip balm with SPF solves this), the tops of the feet and the back of the hands. These are also areas where sun damage tends to become visible earliest.
Sunscreen is not the whole strategy
Photoprotection works best as a combination of habits rather than a single product:
- Seek shade during the hours when the sun is highest.
- Use hats with a wide brim and clothing that covers exposed areas.
- Wear sunglasses that block UV, since the eyes and eyelids are vulnerable too.
- Remember that clouds reduce but do not eliminate UV, and that sand, water and snow reflect radiation back onto the skin.
It is also worth knowing that a tan is itself a sign of UV damage: the skin produces more melanin in response to injury. There is no such thing as a “safe” tanning session, including in tanning beds.
Building a simple routine
For most people, a straightforward approach works: cleanse, apply any treatment products, moisturise, and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen as the last step of the morning routine. If you use makeup, powder or spray sunscreens can make midday reapplication more realistic. If your skin is oily, look for gel or fluid textures; if it is dry, cream formulas with humectants tend to feel better.
People with specific concerns — melasma, rosacea, a history of skin cancer, or use of medication that increases photosensitivity — should follow the guidance of a dermatologist, since those situations may require stricter protection.
