5.12. Introduction to object-oriented programming in Dart: Collections
Page 68 | Listen in audio
In module 5.12 of the Flutter and Dart course, we covered a crucial topic in programming: object-oriented programming (OOP) in Dart, with a focus on Collections. Object-oriented programming is a programming paradigm that uses objects and their interactions to design applications and computer programs. Dart, being an object-oriented language, provides advanced features such as classes, objects, inheritance, encapsulation, polymorphism, and more.
Before we get into collections, let's understand what objects are. In OOP, objects are entities that have state, behavior and identity. State is represented by attributes, behavior is represented by methods, and identity distinguishes each object from other objects. Classes, on the other hand, are basically templates or blueprints for creating objects. They define the attributes and methods that a specific object can have.
So what are Collections in Dart? Collections are a way to group similar items together. Dart offers several ways to group items, such as Lists, Sets, and Maps. Lists and Sets are collections of items, while Maps are collections of key-value pairs.
Lists in Dart are like arrays in other languages. They can contain items of any type and can have duplicate items. Lists are ordered, which means that each item has a specific position in the list. You can add, remove or update items in a list. Additionally, you can iterate over all items in a list using a for loop or the forEach method.
Sets in Dart, on the other hand, are a collection of unique items. They are unordered, which means that the items don't have a specific order. Sets are useful when you want to avoid duplicate items and when the order of the items doesn't matter. You can add, remove items from a set, and you can also check if an item exists in a set.
Maps in Dart are similar to objects in JavaScript or dictionaries in Python. They contain key-value pairs where each key maps to a value. Keys in a map must be unique. You can add, remove, or update key-value pairs in a map. In addition, you can iterate over all keys or values in a map.
To create efficient and scalable applications, it is important to understand and correctly use collections in Dart. For example, if you need a collection of items where order matters, you would use a list. If you need a collection of unique items, you should use a set. And if you need a collection of key-value pairs, you should use a map.
In summary, object-oriented programming in Dart with a focus on Collections is an important topic that every Flutter developer should master. It not only helps you design and structure code more efficiently, but it also makes it easier to manipulate and manage data in your applications. So take the time to understand and practice OOP and Collections concepts in Dart.
Now answer the exercise about the content:
