Technical Analysis is primarily based on historical price data and trading volumes. It involves studying past market data, mainly prices and volumes, to forecast future price movements. Unlike fundamental analysis, which considers economic indicators and company fundamentals, technical analysis relies on chart patterns and technical indicators.
The Double Bottom pattern is a bullish reversal pattern that appears after a downtrend. It looks like a letter 'W' and indicates that the stock is likely to move upwards, signaling the end of the previous downward movement.
Moving averages are commonly used in technical analysis to identify trend direction by smoothing out price data. They help in identifying potential reversal points, making it easier to determine if a market is in an uptrend, downtrend, or sideways trend.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator used in technical analysis to measure the speed and change of price movements. Its primary function is to identify overbought or oversold conditions in a trading asset. An RSI value above 70 typically indicates that an asset may be overbought, while a value below 30 suggests it may be oversold.
Day traders focus on buying and selling financial instruments within the same trading day. They rely on short-term charts such as 1-15 minute charts to make quick decisions based on fast market movements. These time frames allow them to exploit small price fluctuations. Monthly or yearly charts would not provide the needed granularity for day trading strategies.
A leading indicator in technical analysis predicts future price movements. Fibonacci Retracements are considered a leading indicator because they are used to forecast potential reversal levels based on mathematical ratios. This contrasts with lagging indicators, like MACD and Bollinger Bands, which tend to follow trends and provide confirmation rather than forecasts.
The purpose of volume analysis in day trading is to confirm the strength of a price move. High volume during a price increase can indicate strong buying interest and give confidence that the price move is sustainable, while low volume might suggest a weak or unsustainable move.
A candlestick with a long upper shadow and a short body generally suggests price rejection at higher levels. This indicates that although the price moved upwards during the session, it could not sustain those levels and closed closer to the opening price, indicating resistance at higher levels.
The Dow Theory of Technical Analysis is based on the Price discounts everything principle. It assumes that all known information is already reflected in stock prices, so price movements are a representation of the market.
Day traders focus on executing trades within the same day, often closing all positions by the market's close. A Good-till-canceled (GTC) order is not typically used by day traders as it remains active until canceled by the trader, potentially spanning days or weeks. This does not align with the day trading strategy of executing trades quickly and closing them within the same day.
