A magnetic pickup uses electromagnetic induction. A ferromagnetic string vibrating in the pickup's magnetic field changes the flux through the coil, inducing an alternating voltage.
Near the bridge, string displacement is smaller and the sampled vibration contains a stronger proportion of upper harmonics. This usually creates a brighter, sharper sound.
The coils use opposite winding and magnetic relationships. Interference induced similarly in both coils cancels, while the polarity relationships cause the desired string signals to combine.
In standard two-pickup wiring, the three positions select the neck pickup, both pickups together, or the bridge pickup. The center position normally activates both.
A passive volume potentiometer acts as a voltage divider. Turning it down sends a greater proportion of the signal to ground, so less signal reaches the output jack.
The tone capacitor provides a frequency-dependent path to ground. As the tone control is reduced, more high-frequency content is removed, producing a darker sound.
An HSS layout has a humbucker at the bridge and two single-coils in the middle and neck positions. The bridge unit is identifiable by its two adjacent coils.
A 500 kΩ pot presents a lighter electrical load than a 250 kΩ pot. This usually preserves more treble, which is one reason 500 kΩ controls are common with humbuckers.
Coil splitting disables one of a humbucker's coils, leaving the other active. This produces a more single-coil-like response but usually reduces output and hum cancellation.
Strong magnets placed too close to the strings can interfere with their natural vibration. The result may include pitch warble, poor intonation behavior, or shortened sustain.
Active pickup systems include powered electronics, commonly a low-noise preamplifier. The battery supplies the energy needed for this circuitry; it does not power the strings or magnets directly.
On a standard mono guitar connection, the plug tip carries the hot audio signal and the sleeve is ground. The jack terminal touching the tip must therefore connect to the circuit output.
A reverse-wound, reverse-polarity middle pickup can form a hum-canceling pair with the neck or bridge pickup. This reduces common electromagnetic interference when both are selected.
Wax fills small gaps and helps immobilize loose windings or components. This reduces their ability to act like a microphone and enter an acoustic feedback loop at high volume.
Out-of-phase pickups partially cancel frequencies they reproduce in common, especially low frequencies. The combined result is typically thin, hollow, and quieter than expected.
Series wiring combines the coil signals sequentially, generally producing more output and a fuller response. Parallel wiring is usually clearer and brighter, with lower output, while still allowing hum cancellation.
Movement-related dropouts near the jack commonly indicate a loose jack, weak contact pressure, or a cracked solder connection. These should be checked before unrelated mechanical adjustments.
