Adobe Illustrator is a powerful tool that allows graphic designers to create stunning social media designs. One of Illustrator's most useful features is its ability to work with text. This section of our eBook course will focus on working with text in Adobe Illustrator.
First of all, it's important to understand that Illustrator allows you to work with two types of text: point text and area text. Point text is useful when you want to add small amounts of text to your artwork, such as a title or subtitle. To create point text, simply select the text tool (represented by a T icon in the toolbar), click anywhere on your artwork, and start typing.
Area text, on the other hand, is useful when you want to add large blocks of text to your artwork. To create area text, select the text tool, click and drag to create a text box, and then start typing. The text box can be resized and repositioned as needed.
After adding text to your artwork, you may want to change the font, size, color, and alignment of the text. All of these options are available in the property bar at the top of the screen when the text tool is selected.
In Illustrator, you can also convert text to outlines, which turns text into vector objects that can be manipulated like any other object in Illustrator. This is useful if you want to apply special effects to your text. To convert text to outlines, select the text, go to the Type menu and choose 'Create Outlines'.
Additionally, Illustrator allows you to place text along a path. This is useful if you want your text to follow a specific shape. To place text along a path, first create the path using one of Illustrator's drawing tools. Then select the text tool, click on the path and start typing. The text will automatically follow the shape of the path.
Illustrator also offers a number of text effects, such as drop shadow, bevel and emboss, and text wrap. These effects can be accessed through the 'Effect' menu at the top of the screen.
Finally, it's important to remember that Illustrator is a vector design tool, which means that the text you create in Illustrator can be resized to any size without losing quality. This is especially useful when you're creating designs for social media, as it allows you to create text that looks great on any screen size.
In short, working with text in Adobe Illustrator is an essential skill for any graphic designer. With practice, you'll be able to create text that not only looks great, but also helps communicate your design's message effectively.
