The Difference Between Argumentative and Expository Dissertation

In preparing for writing the ENEM, it is essential to understand the difference between two main types of dissertation: argumentative and expository. Both are forms of dissertation, which is a textual genre that presents an analysis on a certain topic, through the exposition of arguments, facts and opinions. However, they have different characteristics.

Argumentative Dissertation

The argumentative dissertation is the most requested type of essay in ENEM. In this type of text, the author must present a point of view on the proposed theme and, based on it, develop arguments that support it. It is therefore necessary that the author of the text has a formed opinion on the subject and is able to defend it in a coherent and articulate manner.

In the argumentative dissertation, it is necessary to present solid and convincing arguments that can persuade the reader to agree with the defended position. In addition, the author must be able to refute possible arguments contrary to his point of view. Therefore, it is a type of text that requires good argumentation skills and in-depth knowledge of the subject.

Expository Dissertation

In the expository dissertation, the main objective is not to persuade the reader, but to inform him. In this type of text, the author must expose a topic, presenting information and facts about it, without necessarily defending an opinion or point of view. The expository dissertation is, therefore, a more informative and less argumentative text.

In an expository dissertation, it is important that the author be able to organize information in a clear and objective way, so that the reader can easily understand it. In addition, it is necessary that the text be based on true and reliable information, so that it can fulfill its objective of informing the reader.

Conclusion

In short, the main difference between an argumentative and an expository dissertation lies in the purpose of the text: while in an argumentative one the author must defend a point of view and persuade the reader, in an expository one the objective is to inform the reader about a given topic. Both types of dissertation are important and can be requested at ENEM, so it is essential to know their characteristics and know how to prepare each one of them.
