Occupational safety is a set of disciplines that aim to prevent accidents and occupational diseases, ensuring the health and integrity of workers. Regulatory Norms, also known as NRs, are a set of requirements and procedures related to occupational safety and medicine, established by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment.
Regulatory Standard 1 - General Provisions (NR 1)
The Regulatory Norm 1, or simply NR 1, is the norm that establishes the general provisions on safety and health at work. It is the basis for the implementation of all other regulatory standards. NR 1 establishes the responsibilities of employers and workers, as well as preventive health and safety measures that must be adopted in all workplaces, regardless of the type of activity or the number of workers.
NR 1 establishes that it is the responsibility of the employer to guarantee the safety and health of workers, providing all the necessary information about the risks present in the workplace and the adequate protection measures. The employer must also ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with health and safety regulations, and that all workers receive adequate training for the safe performance of their tasks.
On the other hand, workers have the responsibility to comply with all safety and health standards established by the employer, as well as to properly use the individual and collective protection equipment provided. Workers must also inform the employer of any situation that may pose a risk to safety and health in the workplace.
Main aspects of NR 1
NR 1 establishes a series of general provisions that must be followed in all workplaces. Among the main aspects of NR 1, we can highlight:
- Training workers: NR 1 establishes that all workers must receive training on safety and health at work, both when they are hired and periodically. The training must be adequate to the type of work that the worker will carry out and the risks to which he will be exposed.
- Information for workers: The employer must inform workers about the risks present in the workplace, adequate protection measures and procedures in case of emergency. The information must be clear, understandable and adequate to the level of training of the workers.
- Risk prevention: The employer must adopt measures to prevent the occurrence of accidents and occupational diseases, including the identification and assessment of risks, the implementation of control measures and the monitoring of the effectiveness of these measures .
- Protective equipment: The employer must provide workers with the individual and collective protection equipment necessary for the safe performance of their tasks. Equipment must be suitable for the type of work and the risks to which workers are exposed.
In summary, NR 1 lays the foundations for safety and health at work, defining the responsibilities of employers and workers and establishing preventive safety and health measures that must be adopted in all workplaces. Proper implementation of NR 1 is critical to ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all workers.
