6.1. Individual and Collective Protection Equipment: Types of Individual Protection Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are work tools that aim to protect the physical health of the worker, minimizing the risks inherent to certain professions. They are mandatory in several areas and activities and, at the same time, are workers' rights. The proper use of this equipment can prevent a series of accidents and occupational diseases.
PPE is classified into different types, according to the part of the body they protect and the type of risk they mitigate. Let's detail some of the main types of Personal Protective Equipment:
1. Head Protection
Safety helmets are used in sectors where there is a risk of impact on the head. They protect against falling objects, impacts against structures and even electrical hazards. There are different types of helmets, each designed for a specific type of risk.
2. Eye and Face Protection
Safety goggles and goggles are used to protect against flying particles, chemical splashes, radiation, and more. They are essential in sectors such as the chemical, metallurgical, construction industry, among others.
3. Hearing Protection
Ear plugs and noise muffs are used to protect the worker's hearing. They are essential in sectors with high noise levels, such as the construction industry and aeronautics.
4. Respiratory Protection
Masks and respirators are used to protect the respiratory system. They are used in environments with dust, smoke, toxic gases and places with little oxygen. Masks can be disposable, half face or full face, depending on the level of protection required.
5. Hand Protection
Safety gloves are one of the most common forms of PPE. There are different types of gloves to protect against mechanical, chemical, thermal and electrical hazards. The choice of glove should be based on the type of work to be performed.
6. Foot Protection
Safety footwear, such as boots and shoes, are used to protect the feet from falling objects, punctures, slips, and electrical shocks. They are essential in sectors such as civil construction, metallurgical industry and forestry.
In addition to PPE, there are also Collective Protection Equipment (CPE), which are devices used to protect all workers in a given environment. Examples of EPCs include ventilation systems, safety signs, machine guards, among others. They are preferable to PPE as they protect more people and do not depend on correct use by the worker to be effective.
It is important to remember that the use of PPE and CPE does not eliminate the risk. They are just one of the control measures that must be adopted to guarantee work safety. Other measures include eliminating risk, replacing hazardous materials, changing work processes, among others. Workplace safety is a complex topic that requires a comprehensive and careful approach.
