How to Make Baguette

The baguette is a classic French bread that is loved around the world. It is characterized by its crispy crust and soft crumb, and is the perfect addition to any meal. If you've always wanted to learn how to make a baguette at home, here's a detailed step-by-step guide for you.

Ingredients

  • 500g wheat flour
  • 10g of salt
  • 10g of sugar
  • 7g dry yeast
  • 350ml of warm water

Dough Preparation

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and sugar. Then add the yeast. It is important that the yeast does not come into direct contact with the salt, as this can inhibit the action of the yeast. Then add warm water to the mixture. The water must be lukewarm, not hot, to activate the yeast.

Use a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients until the dough begins to form. Then use your hands to knead the dough in the bowl until all the ingredients are well incorporated. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and continue to knead for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Fermentation

Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let the dough rest in a warm place for about 1 to 2 hours, or until the dough has doubled in size. This is a crucial step in baguette making as it allows the yeast to do its work, creating the light and airy texture that is characteristic of baguettes.

Baguette Formation

Once the dough has doubled in size, remove it from the bowl and place it on a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Take one half of the dough and start shaping it into a baguette. To do this, flatten the dough into a rectangle, then roll the dough lengthwise. Pinch the seam to seal the baguette. Repeat this process with the other half of the dough.

Second Fermentation

Place the baguettes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cover them with a damp cloth. Let the baguettes rest for about 30 minutes, or until they have nearly doubled in size. During this time, preheat the oven to 230 degrees Celsius.

Baguette baking

Before placing the baguettes in the oven, make diagonal cuts across the top of each baguette using a razor blade or a sharp knife. This will help the baguette expand as it bakes. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the baguettes for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.

Remove the baguettes from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing. Now you have delicious, homemade baguettes that are perfect for sandwiches, to accompany soups and salads, or simply to enjoy with a little butter and cheese.

Conclusion

Making baguettes at home may seem like a time-consuming process, but the result is worth it. The joy of creating your own bread, the delicious fragrance that fills your home while the baguettes are baking, and the incredible taste of a freshly baked baguette really cannot be compared. So the next time you have a little extra time, why not try making your own baguettes? You might be surprised how easy it is and how delicious they are.

You missed! Try again.

The correct process involves mixing the flour, salt, and sugar first. Then, the yeast is added without direct contact with the salt, followed by warm water. The salt can inhibit yeast action if they come into direct contact, and warm water helps activate the yeast correctly.
