Complete First Aid Guide for Drowning
One of the most common accidents, especially during the summer months, is drowning. Knowing how to respond to these situations is essential, as prompt and efficient help can mean the difference between life and death.
What is Drowning?
Drowning is the difficulty or inability to breathe due to immersion or submersion in a liquid, usually water. Drowning can be fatal, or it can result in brain damage and other serious injuries.
How to Recognize a Drowning?
The signs of drowning can vary, but generally include difficulty breathing, pale or bluish skin, coughing, foaming at the mouth or nose, unconsciousness, and unresponsiveness to stimuli.
First Aid for Drowning
Step 1: Assess the Situation
Before taking action, it is important to assess the situation. Make sure it's safe for you to approach the person. If the person is in dangerous water, reach for them with a floating object rather than wading in.
Step 2: Ask for Help
As soon as you realize someone is drowning, call for help. Call the local emergency service or have someone else do it for you.
Step 3: Rescue
If it is safe and you are able, try to rescue the person from the water. Be sure to protect yourself to avoid becoming a victim too.
Step 4: Initiate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Once the person is on solid ground, begin CPR if they are not breathing. Start with 30 chest compressions followed by 2 mouth-to-mouth breaths. Continue until help arrives or the person starts breathing.
Step 5: Treat Shock
If the person is conscious but appears confused, they may be in shock. Lay her on her back, elevate her legs and cover her with a blanket to help improve circulation.
Drowning Prevention
The best way to treat drowning is to prevent it. Always supervise children near water, learn to swim, don't swim alone, and avoid alcohol and drugs when swimming or boating.
This drowning first aid guide can help save a life, but the best strategy is always prevention. Stay safe and help others to do the same.
