Arbitration is a conflict management strategy in which an impartial third party (the arbitrator) makes a decision about the conflict. Unlike mediation, the arbitrator's decision is binding and the parties must abide by it. Arbitration is often used when parties are unable to reach an agreement through negotiation or mediation.
Lastly, litigation is the process of taking a dispute to court. This is generally the most expensive and time-consuming conflict management strategy, and is usually reserved for serious conflicts that cannot be resolved by other means.
In addition to understanding and being able to utilize these strategies, a successful Administrative Assistant also needs to develop a range of skills related to conflict management. These include the ability to identify and understand conflict, the ability to communicate effectively, the ability to listen actively, the ability to negotiate fairly and effectively, and the ability to remain calm and objective in conflict situations. .
