Complete Basic Level German Course: 20.25. Basic Verbs in German - Intent Verbs

German, like any other language, has a wide range of verbs that are essential for everyday communication. In this section, we'll focus on verbs of intention, which are used to express a plan, goal, or desire. These verbs are crucial for expressing what you want to do, what you plan to do, or what you would like to do. Let's get started!

1. Wollen (to want)

The verb "wollen" is used to express a desire or intention. It is a modal verb, which means that it is usually used with another verb in the infinitive form. For example: "Ich will Deutsch lernen" (I want to learn German).

2. Möchten (I would like)

"Möchten" is the polite form of "wollen" and is used to express a wish in a more polite way. For example: "Ich möchte ein Bier, bitte" (I would like a beer, please).

3. Planen (to plan)

When you have a firmer intention, you can use the verb "planen". For example: "Ich plane, nächstes Jahr nach Deutschland zu reisen" (I plan to travel to Germany next year).

4. Beabsichtigen (to intend)

"Beabsichtigen" is a formal verb used to express serious intent. For example: "Ich beabsichtige, mein Deutsch zu verbessern" (I intend to improve my German).

"Hoffen" is used to express a hope or desire for something that has not yet happened. For example: "Ich hoffe, dass es morgen nicht regnet" (I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow).

6. Versuchen (try)

When you intend to try to do something, you can use the verb "versuchen". For example: "Ich versuche, jeden Tag Deutsch zu üben" (I try to practice German every day).

7. Vornehmen (propose)

"Vornehmen" is used to express the intention to accomplish something specific. For example: "Ich nehme mir vor, mehr Bücher auf Deutsch zu lesen" (I propose to read more books in German).

These are just some of the most common verbs of intent in German. Remember that practice is the key to mastering these verbs. So try to use them in your daily conversations and writing exercises to familiarize yourself with them.
