What is BIOS and its Functions
Page 20 | Listen in audio
The BIOS, or Basic Input Output System, is one of the most important components of a computer or notebook. It is software preinstalled on the motherboard chip that controls the computer's hardware and acts as a bridge between the operating system and the hardware. The BIOS is responsible for several tasks, but its main function is to load and start the operating system.
When you turn on your computer, the first software that runs is the BIOS. It scans and initializes all hardware components such as the processor, RAM, hard disk, video card, keyboard, mouse and others. Once all hardware components have been checked and initialized, the BIOS looks for the operating system on a hard drive or an optical disc and loads it into RAM. After that, control of the computer is passed to the operating system.
In addition to initializing the hardware and loading the operating system, the BIOS also has other functions. It maintains the system date and time settings even when the computer is turned off. It also manages communication between the operating system and the hardware. For example, when you press a key on the keyboard, the BIOS detects this action and informs the operating system, which in turn displays the pressed key on the screen.
BIOS also has a user interface called BIOS Setup. This interface allows you to configure various settings on your computer, such as device boot order, date and time settings, security settings, and much more. You can access BIOS Setup by pressing a specific key (usually Del, F2 or F10) during the computer boot process.
Another important function of the BIOS is to perform diagnostic tests on the computer's hardware. These tests, known as POST (Power-On Self Test), are performed each time the computer is turned on. If POST detects a problem with a hardware component, it issues an error code, which can be a set of beeps or a message on the screen. These error codes can help identify and troubleshoot hardware issues.
In summary, the BIOS is an essential computer component that controls the hardware and facilitates communication between the operating system and the hardware. Without the BIOS, the computer would not be able to boot or operate properly.
It is important to note that while the BIOS is still common on most computers, it is gradually being replaced by a newer technology called UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). UEFI offers several advantages over BIOS, such as faster boot times, support for hard disks larger than 2TB, a friendlier user interface, and better security. However, the basic function of UEFI is the same as BIOS - initializing the hardware and loading the operating system.
