6.3 Maintenance of the Transmission System

One of the most critical components of any vehicle is the drivetrain. The transmission is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move. There are three main types of transmissions: manual, automatic and CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Each of these transmission types has its own characteristics and requires specific maintenance to ensure proper operation.

Manual Transmission

The manual transmission, also known as a manual shift transmission, is the oldest type of transmission. It allows the driver to select the desired gear using a shift lever and clutch pedal. Manual transmissions are known for their fuel efficiency and handling control.

Maintaining a manual transmission usually involves checking the transmission fluid level regularly and replacing the fluid as needed. Transmission fluid is essential for lubricating gears and preventing overheating. Also, the clutch may need to be adjusted or replaced from time to time.

Automatic Transmission

The automatic transmission shifts gears automatically, without the need for a shift lever or clutch pedal. This provides a smoother and easier driving experience, especially in heavy traffic or on steep terrain.

The maintenance of an automatic transmission is more complex than that of a manual. Transmission fluid should be checked regularly and replaced as needed. Additionally, the automatic transmission has many internal components that may require maintenance or replacement, including transmission bands, clutches, and valves.

CVT transmission

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that uses two pulleys and a belt instead of gears to vary the gear ratio. This allows for smooth, continuous acceleration without the feeling of shifting gears. CVT transmissions are known for their fuel efficiency and performance.

The maintenance of a CVT transmission is similar to that of an automatic transmission. Transmission fluid should be checked and replaced regularly. Also, the CVT belt may need to be replaced from time to time. It is important to note that CVT transmissions require a specific type of transmission fluid, and using the wrong fluid can cause damage.

Conclusion

Regardless of the transmission type, regular maintenance is essential to ensure proper vehicle operation. This includes regularly checking the transmission fluid level, replacing the fluid as needed, and servicing or replacing specific components. By keeping the drivetrain in good condition, you can extend the life of your vehicle and avoid costly repairs in the future.

Now answer the exercise about the content:

What are the three main types of transmissions in vehicles, and what is a distinguishing feature of each?

You are right! Congratulations, now go to the next page

You missed! Try again.

Manual transmission allows the driver to select gears using a clutch and shift lever. Automatic transmission shifts gears automatically for ease of use. CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) employs pulleys and a belt to provide seamless acceleration, adjusting gear ratios continuously.
