Chapter 3.9 of our work safety e-book is dedicated to the Regulatory Norms (NRs) for work safety, with emphasis on NR 9 - Environmental Risk Prevention Program (PPRA). NRs are a set of rules and guidelines established by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment, designed to protect the health and safety of workers. Among them, NR 9 plays a key role in preventing accidents and occupational diseases.

NR 9 establishes the obligation of elaboration and implementation of the PPRA by all employers and institutions that admit workers as employees. This program aims to preserve the health and integrity of workers, through the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and consequent control of the occurrence of existing environmental risks or that may exist in the work environment.

The PPRA must be developed within the scope of each company establishment, under the responsibility of the employer, with the participation of workers, its scope and depth depending on the characteristics of the risks and control needs.

Environmental risks are divided into three major groups: physical, chemical and biological. Physical hazards include noise, vibrations, radiation, cold, heat, abnormal pressures, humidity, etc. Chemical risks are represented by substances, compounds or products that can penetrate the worker's body through the respiratory tract, or that can come into contact with or be absorbed by the body through the skin or by ingestion. Biological risks are those that present bacteria, fungi, bacilli, parasites, protozoa, viruses, among others.

For each of these risks, NR 9 establishes a series of control measures that must be adopted. These can range from replacing the risk agent, through the implementation of collective and individual control measures, to the adoption of health education programs. In addition, the standard provides for the monitoring of workers' exposure to risks and periodic medical examinations, among other measures.

It is important to emphasize that the PPRA is part of a broader set of initiatives that must be adopted by companies to guarantee the health and safety of workers. This set includes, among others, the Occupational Health Medical Control Program (PCMSO), provided for in NR 7, and the Work Conditions and Environment Program in the Construction Industry (PCMAT), provided for in NR 18.

In summary, NR 9 and PPRA are essential tools for the prevention of accidents and occupational diseases. Its proper implementation can result in a safer and healthier work environment, with benefits for workers and the company as a whole.
