Regulatory Standard 26 (NR 26), also known as Safety Signaling, is one of the most fundamental standards when it comes to work safety. This standard, issued by the Ministry of Labor and Employment of Brazil, establishes the guidelines for the correct safety signage in the workplace, aiming to minimize the risk of accidents and guarantee the safety and health of workers.

NR 26 is divided into several sections, each of which addresses a specific aspect of safety signage. These sections include: colors for identifying safety equipment and devices, signage for circulation areas, danger signage, mandatory signage, firefighting equipment signage, among others.

Colors are an essential part of NR 26. They are used to identify and distinguish different types of signage, and each color has a specific meaning. For example, the color red is used for firefighting and danger signs. Yellow is used to identify warning situations, while green indicates safety.

NR 26 also establishes that all signs must be clearly visible and in good condition. Furthermore, they must be placed in appropriate locations, according to the nature of the risk. Safety signs must be appropriate for the type of activity and the risk involved, to ensure that workers can easily identify risks and know how to act in an emergency.

Another important aspect of NR 26 is the signaling of circulation areas. This section of the standard establishes that all circulation areas must be properly signaled, including passages, stairs, ramps, corridors and access roads. Signage must clearly indicate emergency exits and escape routes, and must be clear of obstructions to ensure safe evacuation in an emergency.

Danger signage is another crucial section of NR 26. It states that all workplaces that pose risks to the health or safety of workers must be signposted. Signage must clearly indicate the nature of the risk and the preventive measures that must be taken. In addition, the standard also requires workers to be trained to understand and follow safety signs.

Finally, NR 26 also addresses the signaling of firefighting equipment. This section of the standard establishes that all fire-fighting equipment, such as fire extinguishers and hydrants, must be properly marked. Signage must clearly indicate the location and type of equipment to ensure workers can find and use the equipment correctly in the event of a fire.
