3.1. NodeJS Basics: NodeJS Installation

NodeJS is a JavaScript application development platform that allows developers to develop fast and scalable web applications. It is a back-end technology that can be used to create web servers, chatbots, APIs, among other applications. In this module, we'll focus on the basics of NodeJS, starting with installation.

NodeJS Installation

Installing NodeJS is a very simple and straightforward process. The first step is to go to the official NodeJS website - https://nodejs.org/ - and download the appropriate installer for your operating system. There are versions for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Once the installer is downloaded, run it and follow the on-screen instructions. Installation is quite simple and straightforward. You can leave all the default options unless you have specific needs.

Once installed, you can verify that NodeJS installed correctly by opening a terminal or command line and typing:

node -v

This should return the NodeJS version you installed. If you get an error message, it could be that the installation was unsuccessful or that the NodeJS path was not correctly added to your system PATH. If so, you may need additional help troubleshooting the issue.

Understanding NodeJS

NodeJS is a platform built on Google Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine. It uses a non-blocking I/O model, which makes it lightweight and efficient, perfect for real-time data-driven applications that run on distributed devices.

One of the main features of NodeJS is the use of JavaScript. This means you can use the same language on both the client and the server, which can improve productivity and code consistency.

Another important feature of NodeJS is the npm package manager (Node Package Manager). npm is a powerful tool that allows you to install, update and manage software packages for your project. It has a huge library of third-party software packages that you can use in your project, which can save you a lot of development time.

Why use NodeJS?

There are many reasons to use NodeJS for web application development. In addition to being fast and efficient, NodeJS is also very scalable. This means that you can use NodeJS to create applications that can handle a large number of simultaneous connections with high efficiency.

NodeJS is also very flexible. It doesn't impose any application-specific framework, so you have a lot of freedom to design your application the way you see fit.

Finally, NodeJS has a very active and vibrant community. There are many resources available for learning, from tutorials and online courses to books and conferences. Additionally, there are many third-party modules available that you can use to add functionality to your application.

In summary, NodeJS is an excellent choice for developing modern, fast and scalable web applications. With this course, we hope you can learn to use NodeJS effectively and create your own web applications.
