Maternal and newborn nursing is a specialty within nursing that focuses on the care of pregnant women and newborns. It is a profession that requires a deep understanding of the female anatomy, as well as the processes of fetal and neonatal growth and development.
Responsibilities of Maternal Nursing

To become a maternal and newborn nurse, you must complete a registered nursing program and pass the nursing licensure exam. From there, nurses can choose to specialize in maternal and newborn care, which often requires additional training and, in some cases, additional certification.
