How to Make Flaxseed Bread
Making homemade bread is a rewarding and delicious activity. Today, we're going to learn how to make a nutritious and tasty flaxseed bread. Flaxseed is a seed rich in omega 3s, fiber and protein, and is an excellent addition to your diet. So, shall we begin?
Ingredients:
- 500 grams of whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons of flaxseed
- 1 tablespoon dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 300 ml of warm water
Step by Step:
1. Preparing Flaxseed
Before you start making the bread, it is important to prepare the flaxseed. Place the flaxseeds in a bowl of water and soak for about 2 hours. This will help release the mucilage from the flaxseed, which will give the bread a special texture.
2. Preparing the Dough
In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Make a hole in the center of this mixture and add the olive oil and warm water. Start mixing the ingredients with a wooden spoon. When the dough begins to take shape, add the drained flaxseed. Keep mixing until all the ingredients are well incorporated and the dough is homogeneous.
3. Kneading the Dough
Transfer the dough to a clean, floured surface. Knead the dough for about 10 to 15 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour. If it's too dry, add a little more water.
4. Letting the dough rise
Place the dough in a large bowl, cover with a clean tea towel and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
5. Modeling the Bread
Once the dough has risen, knead it again for a few minutes to remove the air. Then model the dough in the shape of bread you prefer. You can make one large loaf or several small loaves.
6. Baking the Bread
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Place the bread on a greased baking sheet and bake for about 30 to 40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and makes a hollow sound when tapped lightly on the underside.
Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Tips:
To find out if the dough is just right, do the finger test: press the dough with your finger. If the dough comes back slowly, it's ready. If it comes back quickly, you need to knead some more.
Flaxseed can be replaced with other seeds, such as chia or sesame, to vary the bread's flavor and nutrients.
Flaxseed bread is perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack. It is delicious with butter, jam, cheese or simply plain. Enjoy!
