First aid for cerebrovascular accidents (CVA)
A stroke, also known as a stroke, is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. Stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is stopped or reduced, depriving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die.
Signs and symptoms of a stroke
The signs and symptoms of a stroke can include:
- Difficulty speaking and understanding what others are saying
- Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm, or leg
- Blurred or decreased vision in one or both eyes
- Sudden, severe headache accompanied by vomiting, dizziness, or changes in consciousness
- Difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
First aid for stroke
If you suspect someone is having a stroke, it's critical to act quickly. Here are the steps you should follow:
- Identify the symptoms: Use the FAST method to remember the signs of a stroke. F for Face (is one side of the face drooping?), A for Arms (can the person lift both arms?), S for Speech (is speech slurred or strange?), T for Time (time to call 911 immediately if you see any of these signs).
- Call the emergency: If you identify any of these symptoms, even if they disappear, call the emergency services immediately. Write down the time when the first symptoms appear. This is important because it can affect stroke treatment.
- Monitor the person: While waiting for medical help, keep the person comfortable. Monitor vital signs such as breathing and pulse. If the person is unconscious, place them on their side to prevent choking if they vomit.
- Don't give the person anything to eat: It is important not to give the person anything to eat or drink, as they may have difficulty swallowing.
Stroke treatment
The treatment of a stroke depends on the type of stroke - whether it is ischemic (caused by a clot) or hemorrhagic (caused by bleeding). Treatment may include drugs to break up clots, surgery or catheter procedures to remove clots, or surgery to repair bleeding in the brain. Rehabilitation is an important part of recovery.
Stroke prevention
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best way to prevent stroke. This includes controlling high blood pressure, not smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, and managing medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
In short, a stroke is a medical emergency that requires quick action. Recognizing the signs and knowing what to do can save a life and limit long-term disability.
