Familiarization with the vocabulary of clothing in Italian

When you are learning a new language, one of the first things you need to know is basic vocabulary. This includes learning the names of clothes in Italian. Understanding these words will help you not only communicate better, but also shop more efficiently in Italy or anywhere Italian is spoken.

A few basic words

Let's start with a few simple words. The Italian word for 'clothes' is 'vestiti'. If you want to be more specific, you can use 'abbigliamento' which translates to 'clothing'. The word for 'shoes' is 'scarpe' and 'hat' is 'cappello'. 'Camisa' translates as 'camicia' and 'trousers' as 'pantaloni'. The word for 'dress' is 'vestito'.

Men's and women's clothing

In the Italian language, as in many other languages, there are different words for men's and women's clothing. For example, a 'men's shirt' is called 'camicia da uomo' and a 'woman's shirt' is called 'camicia da donna'. Similarly, 'men's pants' are 'pantaloni da uomo' and 'women's pants' are 'pantaloni da donna'.

Colors

Knowing colors in Italian is also useful when discussing clothes. Here are some basic colors: red is 'rosso', blue is 'blu', green is 'verde', black is 'nero', white is 'bianco', yellow is 'giallo', gray is 'grigio' and brown is 'marrone'.

Useful expressions

Finally, here are some useful expressions related to clothes: 'Try on an outfit' is 'provare un vestito'. 'Dressing' is 'vestirsi' and 'undressing' is 'spogliarsi'. 'This shirt is too tight' would be 'Questa camicia è troppo stretta' and 'These pants are too wide' would be 'Questi pantaloni sono troppo larghi'.
