Religion plays an important role in Korean culture, and understanding some religious expressions in Korean is crucial to communicating effectively. This chapter of our basic Korean course e-book is dedicated to teaching you 52 expressions of religion in Korean.

1. 신 (Shin) - God. It is a word used to refer to any deity in general.

9. 기독교 (Gidokgyo) - Christianity. Another major religion in Korea.

10. 사찰 (Sachal) - Temple. This is the place of worship for Buddhists.

11. 교회 (Gyoehoe) - Church. The place of worship for Christians.

12. 스님 (Seunim) - Monk. This is the person who leads worship at a Buddhist temple.

13. 목사 (Moksa) - Shepherd. This is the person who leads worship in a Christian church.

14. 안식일 (Ansik-il) - Sabbat. The day of rest in Christianity.

15. 대림절 (Daelimjeol) - Advent. The period of preparation for Christmas in Christianity.

16. 부활절 (Buhwaleul) - Easter. The celebration of Jesus' resurrection in Christianity.

17. 성탄절 (Seongtanjeol) - Christmas. The celebration of the birth of Jesus in Christianity.

18. 천주교 (Cheonjugyo) - Catholicism. One of the main denominations of Christianity in Korea.

19. 프로테스탄트 (Peuroteseutanteu) - Protestantism. Another major denomination of Christianity in Korea.

20. 불상 (Bulsang) - Buddha statue. These are sacred images in Buddhism.

21. 성모 (Seongmo) - Virgin Mary. The mother of Jesus in Christianity.

22. 죄 (Joe) - Sin. The Transgression of God's Law in Christianity.

23. 구원 (Guwon) - Salvation. Liberation from sin and its consequences in Christianity.

24. 연기 (Yeongi) - Incense. Used in religious rituals in both Buddhism and Christianity.

25. 참회 (Chamhoe) - Repentance. The expression of remorse for sins in Christianity.

26. 성찬 (Seongchan) - Eucharist. The Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ in Christianity.

27. 사랑 (Sarang) - Love. One of the main teachings in both Christianity and Buddhism.

28. 평화 (Pyeonghwa) - Peace. A state of tranquility and stillness, a goal in both Buddhism and Christianity.

29. 용서 (Yongseo) - Sorry. The action of forgiving someone for their mistakes or sins.

30. 기적 (Gijeok) - Miracle. An extraordinary event believed to be caused by God.
