Hello, welcome to the eighth lesson of our Basic Korean eBook. Today, we're going to learn about days of the week and months in Korean. This is an essential step in your learning journey as it will help you schedule appointments, make reservations and understand when events are taking place.

Days of the week in Korean

In Korean, the days of the week are very easy to learn, as they all end with the same suffix '요일' (yo-il), which means 'day of the week'. Here is the list:

  • Monday: 월요일 (wol-yo-il)
  • Tuesday: 화요일 (hwa-yo-il)
  • Wednesday: 수요일 (su-yo-il)
  • Thursday: 목요일 (mok-yo-il)
  • Friday: 금요일 (geum-yo-il)
  • Saturday: 토요일 (to-yo-il)
  • Sunday: 일요일 (il-yo-il)

You may notice that the names of the days of the week are based on the elements of the universe, such as the moon (월), fire (화), water (수), wood (목), metal (금), earth (토 ) and sun (일).

Months in Korean

Months in Korean also follow a simple pattern. They are numbered from one to twelve and all end with the suffix '월' (wol), which means 'month'. Here is the list:

  • January: 1월 (il-wol)
  • February: 2월 (i-wol)
  • March: 3월 (sam-wol)
  • April: 4월 (sa-wol)
  • May: 5월 (o-wol)
  • June: 6월 (yu-wol)
  • July: 7월 (chil-wol)
  • August: 8월 (pal-wol)
  • September: 9월 (gu-wol)
  • October: 10월 (sip-wol)
  • November: 11월 (sip-il-wol)
  • December: 12월 (sip-i-wol)

For better understanding, numbers in Korean are used to indicate months. For example, '1월' (il-wol) means 'first month', which is January, and '12월' (sip-i-wol) means 'twelfth month', which is December.

Putting it all into practice

To say the date in Korean, you must follow the order: year, month and day. For example, '2022년 3월 15일' (i-cheon-i-baek-i-sip-i-nyeon sam-wol sip-o-il) means 'March 15, 2022'.

With this information, you can start to familiarize yourself with the days of the week and the months in Korean. Remember to practice regularly so that these words become part of your active vocabulary. We hope you found this lesson useful and that you will continue to learn with us in our Basic Korean eBook.
