Crate Training: Teaching Your Dog to Love its Crate
Crate training is an essential part of a dog's education process. Not only does it help keep your dog safe when you can't supervise it, it's also a useful tool for obedience training and can be a comfort zone for your dog. Here are twelve steps to help your dog love his crate.
1. Choose the Right Box
First, you need to choose the right crate for your dog. It should be big enough that your dog can get up, turn around and lie down comfortably, but not so big that he can use a corner as a toilet.
2. Make the Crate Comfortable
Put a comfy bed and some favorite toys in the crate to make it a nice place for your dog.
3. Insert Box
Place the box in an area where the family spends a lot of time and leave the door open. Let your dog explore the crate at his own pace.
4. Crate Feed Your Dog
Place your dog's food bowl inside the crate. This will create a positive association with the box.
5. Start Closing the Door
Once your dog is comfortable with the crate, start closing the door for short periods of time while he is eating or playing with a toy.
6. Increase Time in Box
Gradually increase the time your dog spends in the crate, starting with 5-10 minutes and working up to a few hours.
7. Use the Nap and Bedtime Crate
Encourage your dog to use the crate for naps and bedtime. This will help reinforce the box as a safe and comfortable place.
8. Don't Use the Box as Punishment
Never use the box as a place of punishment. This will make your dog associate the crate with negative experiences.
9. Practice Stepping Out of the Box
Teach your dog to calmly leave the crate. Don't let him run away as soon as the door opens.
10. Use the Box When You Can't Supervise
Use the crate when you cannot supervise your dog, such as when you are at work or busy with other tasks.
11. Make the Box a Positive Place
Reward your dog for going into the crate and make it a place where good things happen.
12. Be Patient
Finally, be patient. Crate training can take time, but patience and consistency are key to success.
By following these steps, you can teach your dog to see the crate as a safe and comfortable place, and a useful tool for obedience training.
