Capacitors

Página 4

Capacitors are very important electronic components in basic electronics. They are devices that store electrical energy in an electric field, and are used in electronic circuits for various purposes, such as signal filtering, signal coupling, timing, among others.

Capacitors are made up of two conducting plates separated by an insulating material called a dielectric. The energy storage capacity of the capacitor is determined by the area of the plates, the distance between them and the type of dielectric used.

There are several types of capacitors, each with specific characteristics. Electrolytic capacitors, for example, are widely used in power supplies, as they have high energy storage capacity and low electrical resistance. Ceramic capacitors are used in high frequency circuits, as they have low capacitance and high stability.

Capacitors are also classified according to their polarity. Non-polarized capacitors can be connected in any polarity, while polarized capacitors have a specific polarity, and must be connected according to the component indication.

In addition, it is important to highlight that capacitors have a characteristic called capacitive impedance, which varies according to the frequency of the applied signal. This means that in high-frequency circuits, capacitors can have a low impedance, which can affect circuit performance.

Finally, it is important to note that capacitors must be handled with care, as they can store electrical energy even after the circuit has been turned off. It is recommended to use a multimeter to discharge the capacitor before handling it.
