In our basic Japanese course, chapter 35 is dedicated to basic vocabulary related to technology and media. With the increasing influence of technology and media in our daily lives, it is essential to know basic vocabulary in this area, especially if you are planning to travel to Japan or communicate with native Japanese speakers.
First, we'll cover technology-related terms. 'Computer' in Japanese is 'コンピュータ' (Konpyu-ta). The term 'Internet' is 'インターネット' (Inta-netto), while 'website' is 'ウェブサイト' (Uebusaito). 'Email' is 'メール' (Me-ru) and 'smartphone' is 'スマートフォン' (Suma-tofon). 'Tablet' is 'タブレット' (Taburetto) and 'camera' is 'カメラ' (Kamera). If you want to say 'technology', the term in Japanese is '技術' (Gijutsu).
In addition, there are specific terms for the various social media platforms we use. 'Facebook' is 'フェイスブック' (Feisubukku), 'Twitter' is 'ツイッター' (Tsuitta-) and 'Instagram' is 'インスタグラム' (Insutaguramu). 'YouTube' is 'ユーチューブ' (Yu-chu-bu) and 'Snapchat' is 'スナップチャット' (Sunappuchatto).
Next, we'll move on to media-related terms. 'News' in Japanese is 'ニュース' (Nyusu). 'Newspaper' is '新聞' (Shinbun) and 'magazine' is '雑誌' (Zasshi). If you want to say 'television', the term in Japanese is 'テレビ' (Terebi). 'Radio' is 'ラジオ' (Rajio) and 'film' is '映画' (Eiga). 'Music' is '音楽' (Ongaku) and 'book' is '本' (Hon). 'Game' is 'ゲーム' (Ge-mu) and 'animation' is 'アニメーション' (Anime-shon).
Also, we'll learn some useful phrases related to technology and media. For example, 'I'm surfing the internet' in Japanese is 'インターネットを閲覧しています' (Inta-netto o etsuran shiteimasu). 'I'm sending an email' is 'メールを送っています' (Me-ru o okutteimasu). 'I'm watching TV' is 'テレビを見ています' (Terebi o miteimasu). 'I'm reading a newspaper' is '新聞を読んでいます' (Shinbun o yondeimasu). 'I'm listening to music' is '音楽を聴いています' (Ongaku o kiiteimasu).
