Animals, or "Tiere" in German, are a fundamental part of any language's vocabulary. In this chapter of our basic German course, we'll learn how to say the names of some common animals in German. Let's get started!

1. Hund (Dog)

Man's best friend is known as "Hund" in German. For example, "Der Hund ist sehr freundlich", which means "The dog is very friendly".

2. Katze (Cat)

Cats, or "Katzen", are common pets in Germany. "Die Katze schläft auf dem Sofa" means "The cat is sleeping on the sofa".

3. Vogel (Bird)

The birds are called "Vögel" in German. An example sentence is "Der Vogel singt ein schönes Lied", which means "The bird is singing a beautiful song".

4. Fish (Fish)

Fish in German is "Fisch". "Der Fisch schwimmt im Wasser" means "The fish is swimming in the water".

5. Pferd (Horse)

Horse in German is "Pferd". "Das Pferd rennt schnell" means "The horse runs fast".

6. Kuh (Cow)

Cows, or "Kühe", are common animals in the German countryside. "Die Kuh gibt Milch" means "The cow gives milk".

7. Bär (Bear)

Bear in German is "Bär". "Der Bär ist ein großes Tier" means "The bear is a big animal".

8. Hase (Rabbit)

Rabbit in German is "Hase". "Der Hase hüpft im Gras" means "The rabbit is jumping in the grass".

9. Elephant (Elephant)

Elephant in German is "Elefant". "Der Elefant ist das größte Landtier" means "The elephant is the largest land animal".

10. Löwe (Leo)

Lion in German is "Löwe". "Der Löwe ist der König der Tiere" means "The lion is the king of beasts".

11. Affe (Monkey)

Monkey in German is "Affe". "Der Affe klettert auf den Baum" means "The monkey is climbing the tree".

These are just a few examples of animals in German. It is important to remember that, as in English, some animals have different names depending on their gender. For example, a male cat is a "Kater", while a female cat is a "Katze".
