Take a dog for a walk on a warm afternoon and within minutes the mouth opens, the tongue drops out, and the breathing turns into a fast, shallow rhythm. We all recognise panting. Far fewer people know what it actually does — or why a dog does it instead of simply sweating the way we do.
Panting is not a sign of weakness or poor fitness. It is a cooling system, and understanding how it works makes you much better at spotting the moment it stops being enough.
Dogs have sweat glands — just not useful ones
Humans are unusually good at sweating. We have sweat glands spread across almost the entire skin surface, and evaporating that moisture carries a large amount of heat away from the body. It is one of the reasons humans are such capable endurance athletes in hot conditions.
Dogs are built differently. They do have sweat glands, but the ones that produce watery sweat are concentrated in the paw pads — which is why you sometimes see damp paw prints on a tiled floor from a nervous or overheated dog. The glands distributed through the rest of the skin produce an oily secretion that conditions the coat rather than cooling the body.
Add a dense coat of fur that traps air against the skin, and skin-surface evaporation simply cannot do the job. So dogs moved the cooling system inside.
How panting sheds heat
Panting is evaporative cooling relocated to the respiratory tract. The mechanism has three parts:
- Moving air fast over wet surfaces. The tongue, the inside of the mouth, the throat and the nasal passages are all moist. Rapid, shallow breaths push a large volume of air across them.
- Evaporation absorbs heat. Turning liquid water into vapour requires energy, and that energy is drawn from the tissue and blood underneath. The blood leaving those surfaces is cooler than the blood that arrived.
- Cooled blood circulates. That slightly cooler blood returns to the body core and, crucially, to the brain — which is the tissue least tolerant of overheating.
Notice the word shallow. Panting is deliberately not deep breathing. Deep breaths would exchange large volumes of gas in the lungs and disturb the dog’s blood chemistry. Shallow, rapid panting mostly ventilates the upper airway — the part that needs airflow for cooling — without hyperventilating the lungs.
Panting is also not the only tool. Dogs widen the blood vessels in their ears, face and belly to bring warm blood closer to the surface, seek out cool floors to lie on, and reduce activity. Panting is just the most visible part of a broader strategy.
Not all dogs pant equally well
Because the system depends on airflow through the nose, mouth and throat, anything that narrows that pathway reduces cooling capacity.

The humidity point deserves emphasis, because it is the one owners most often miss. A 26 °C day with dry air is manageable for most dogs. The same temperature with very humid air is considerably more dangerous, because evaporation — the entire basis of panting — becomes much less effective.
Panting that has nothing to do with heat
Temperature is the most common trigger, but not the only one. Dogs also pant when they are:
- Excited or aroused — before a walk, during play, when visitors arrive
- Anxious or stressed — car rides, fireworks, vet waiting rooms, thunderstorms
- In pain — panting is one of the quieter signals of discomfort in dogs
- Recovering from exertion — the same way we breathe hard after running
- Affected by medication — certain drugs, including corticosteroids, are well known for increasing panting
This is why context matters more than the panting itself. A dog panting after chasing a ball in the garden is unremarkable. A dog panting heavily while lying still in a cool, quiet room is telling you something.
When panting becomes a warning sign
Heatstroke happens when heat production outpaces the dog’s ability to shed it, and it is a genuine emergency. Signs that panting has stopped being ordinary include:
- Frantic, noisy panting that does not settle with rest and shade
- Thick, ropey drool
- Gums or tongue that look very dark red, or conversely pale
- Wobbly, uncoordinated movement or reluctance to stand
- Vomiting or diarrhoea alongside heavy panting
- Confusion, glazed expression, or collapse
Any of these warrants immediate veterinary attention. While arranging that, move the dog into shade or air conditioning, offer small amounts of cool water if the dog is alert enough to drink, and wet the coat with cool — not ice-cold — water, particularly over the belly, armpits and groin, where large blood vessels run close to the surface. Ice water can cause the surface blood vessels to constrict, which paradoxically slows heat loss.
Sudden changes in a dog’s normal panting pattern — panting at night, panting at rest, panting that appeared over days without a change in weather — are also worth a veterinary check, since they can point to pain, respiratory disease, heart problems or hormonal conditions.
Practical takeaways for daily life
- Walk in the cooler hours. Early morning and late evening, not midday.
- Check the ground. If pavement is too hot for the back of your hand, it is too hot for paw pads.
- Airflow beats fur removal. Shaving a double-coated breed can remove protection against sun without improving cooling; shade and moving air help more.
- Water everywhere. Multiple bowls, refilled often.
- Never a parked car. Interior temperatures climb quickly even with windows cracked, and panting cannot keep up.
Panting looks dramatic to human eyes, but for a dog it is simply the engine of an efficient, well-evolved cooling system — one with clear limits that owners are in a position to respect.
