Open any mixing session and you will find an equalizer on almost every track. EQ is the most used tool in music production, and also the one beginners most often misuse — usually by boosting everything until the mix turns harsh. Additive EQ means boosting what you want. It is legitimate and often necessary, but boosts add energy and can quickly make a mix loud and tiring. A common trap is boosting one track, then boosting its neighbours to compete, and ending up with everything louder and nothing clearer.
Practical habits that improve results
- Listen in context. A guitar tone that sounds gorgeous alone may occupy the exact space the vocal needs. Make most EQ decisions with the full mix playing.
- Cut narrow, boost wide. Problems tend to be narrow resonances; pleasing tonal changes tend to be broad. This one rule of thumb prevents a lot of unnatural results.
- Find problems by sweeping. Create a temporary narrow boost, sweep it across the spectrum until something rings unpleasantly, then turn that boost into a cut.
- Match loudness before judging. Louder almost always sounds better to the ear. Compensate the output level so you compare tone, not volume.
- Carve space rather than stacking. If bass and kick fight, gently cut one where the other is strongest instead of boosting both.
- Trust your ears over the display. Frequency analysers are informative, but a curve that looks tidy can still sound wrong.
