Course Description

Knowing what to do in the first critical minutes of an emergency can prevent a situation from getting worse and, in some cases, keep someone alive until professional help arrives. This free online first aid course is designed to build calm, practical decision-making under pressure, so you can act with confidence at home, at work, or in public spaces when seconds matter.

You will learn how to approach an incident safely, assess what is happening, and choose the right action quickly. The course focuses on real-world scenarios such as catastrophic bleeding, embedded objects, fractures, shock, choking in adults and vulnerable people, chest pain and suspected heart attack, breathing emergencies including hypoxia, drowning and cold water shock, electrical injuries, burns, and eye injuries. You will also strengthen your understanding of emergency communication, including when and how to call emergency services and what to do while waiting for them to arrive.

A major theme throughout is prioritising life threats: controlling severe external bleeding using direct pressure, haemostatic dressings, and tourniquets; protecting the airway and responding effectively when choking becomes severe or a person becomes unresponsive; and supporting circulation and breathing after resuscitation. You will become familiar with AED readiness and post-resuscitation actions, along with practical considerations such as consent, scene safety, and recognising mechanisms of injury. Guidance also covers challenging environments and high-threat incidents, helping you think clearly about personal safety before attempting to assist others.

Interactive questions and exercises reinforce key steps and help you turn knowledge into action. By the end, you will be better prepared to recognise danger signs, take effective immediate measures, and provide reassurance and support in stressful situations. Whether you are a caregiver, parent, employee, student, or simply someone who wants to be ready, this course equips you with skills that can make a meaningful difference in everyday emergencies.
