What the ない-form expresses

The ない-form is the plain (casual) negative for the present/future. It means “do not / doesn’t” and “will not.” It is used in everyday speech, casual writing, and informal messages.

Meaning range:

  • のまない = (I/you/they) don’t drink / won’t drink
  • いかない = don’t go / won’t go
  • たべない = don’t eat / won’t eat

ない-form vs. polite negative (ません)

Both express negation in the present/future, but the style level differs:

StyleNegativeExampleTypical use
Casual (plain)ないコーヒーをのまない。Friends, family, internal thoughts, casual texts
Politeませんコーヒーをのみません。Customers, coworkers (formal), strangers

In this chapter, you’ll focus on building the ない-form quickly and accurately.

Transformation practice (step-by-step)

Step 1: Identify the verb type and the final kana

Look at the dictionary form and focus on the last kana:

  • のむ ends in む → Group 1 pattern む → ま
  • たべる ends in る → Group 2 pattern “drop る”
  • する → irregular

Step 2: Apply the rule

Group 1: のむ → のま + ない → のまない
Group 1: かう → かわ + ない → かわない (う→わない)
Group 2: たべる → たべ + ない → たべない
Irregular: くる → こない

Step 3: Drill contrast pairs for automaticity

Read each pair as a single unit: “do / don’t.”

  • いく / いかない
  • のむ / のまない
  • かう / かわない

Optional speed drill: cover the right side and produce the negative instantly.

Daily-life sentence frames (plug-and-play)

Use these frames to make natural casual negatives. Replace the noun or time word as needed.

Frame A: “(I) don’t do X.”

(わたしは)Nを Vない。

  • コーヒーをのまない。
  • にくをたべない。
  • おさけをのまない。

Frame B: “Today, I’m not going.”

きょうは Vない。

  • きょうはいかない。
  • きょうははたらかない。
  • きょうはべんきょうしない。

Frame C: “I don’t (usually) do it.”

あまり Vない。

  • あまりコーヒーをのまない。
  • あまりテレビをみない。

Frame D: “I’m not doing it now.” (casual negative with a common pattern)

いま、Vない。

  • いま、たべない。
  • いま、いかない。

Mini practice set (produce the ない-form)

Convert each verb to the ない-form, then say a short sentence.

  • のむ → ________ → コーヒーを________。
  • いく → ________ → きょうは________。
  • かう → ________ → それは________。
  • たべる → ________ → にくを________。
  • する → ________ → きょうはべんきょう________。
  • くる → ________ → あしたは________。

Now answer the exercise about the content:

Which rule correctly forms the casual negative (ない-form) for Group 1 (う-verbs)?

You are right! Congratulations, now go to the next page

You missed! Try again.

Group 1 verbs make the ない-form by changing the final kana from the う-row to the あ-row and adding ない; verbs ending in う use わない.
