What “Test Types” Mean in Practice
A test type is a category of testing defined by the kind of quality characteristic you want to evaluate. Instead of focusing on where testing happens (levels) or why you test (risk), test types focus on what you test: behavior, data handling, usability, performance, security, compatibility, and more.
In real projects, teams often say “we did functional testing” when they mean “we verified the main features work.” But functional coverage is only one dimension. Non-functional coverage (performance, security, accessibility, reliability, etc.) is equally important because users experience the system as a whole: it must work correctly and work well under real conditions.
Think of test types as lenses. You can point multiple lenses at the same feature. For example, “Checkout” can be tested functionally (correct totals, correct payment flow) and non-functionally (response time under load, security of payment data, accessibility of forms, resilience to network drops).
