Continuity as a Promise of Predictability
Continuity is a way to formalize a simple reliability idea: if you make a small change to the input of a function, the output should not suddenly jump far away. This matters whenever a function is used to model a real process (temperature vs. time, cost vs. quantity, position vs. time, concentration vs. dosage). In such settings, you often trust that tiny measurement errors or tiny adjustments do not cause wildly different outcomes. Continuity is the mathematical version of that trust.
To keep the focus on “reliable change,” think of continuity as a promise: near a chosen input value a, the function behaves calmly. You can move x a little bit around a, and f(x) will move only a little bit around f(a). If that promise fails, the function is discontinuous at a, meaning there is some kind of break in reliability at that point.

- That approached value equals the actual value f(a). The “nearby behavior” matches the “declared value” at the point.
This is a compact checklist you can use without re-deriving anything. It also makes clear how continuity can fail: the function might be missing a value, might approach different values from different sides, or might approach a value that does not match the function’s defined value at that point.
Continuity as “No Surprise Jumps”

A jump discontinuity occurs when the function approaches two different values from the left and right of a. In reliability terms, the system has a sudden state change at a threshold.
Example (a simplified pricing rule):
p(x) = 10 if x < 100, and p(x) = 12 if x ≥ 100As x approaches 100 from below, p(x) stays near 10. As x approaches 100 from above, p(x) stays near 12. A tiny change in x around 100 can cause a $2 jump. This is not “small input → small output.” The function is discontinuous at 100.
3) Infinite Discontinuity (Output Blows Up)
Sometimes the output becomes unbounded near a point. In reliability terms, the system becomes unstable: tiny input changes can produce extremely large outputs.
Example:
g(x) = 1/(x - 3)Near x = 3, the denominator is tiny, so the output can become very large in magnitude. No matter how small an output tolerance you choose, you cannot find an input window around 3 that keeps g(x) within it. The reliability promise fails dramatically.
4) Oscillatory Discontinuity (No Settling Down)
Some functions do not settle toward a single value near a point because they oscillate faster and faster. In reliability terms, the output keeps swinging even when the input is extremely close to a.
Example idea:
h(x) = sin(1/x) near x = 0As x approaches 0, 1/x grows without bound, and sin(1/x) keeps oscillating between -1 and 1 without approaching one value. Even though the outputs remain bounded, they are not predictable in the “approaches a single value” sense.

When you are given a formula and asked whether it is continuous at x = a, use this practical routine. It works for many common functions and helps you organize your reasoning.
Step 1: Verify the Function Value Exists

Continuity on an Interval: Reliability Over a Range
