29. Vertebrates
Page 66 | Listen in audio
The vertebrate group is one of the most diverse and complex in the animal kingdom, encompassing a variety of species ranging from tiny fish to giant elephants and whales. This chapter of our Enem Biology e-book will focus on providing a detailed overview of vertebrates, their types, characteristics, functions and importance.
Vertebrates, belonging to the Vertebrata subphylum, are distinguished from other animals by the presence of a vertebral column or backbone, which supports the body and protects the spinal cord. This spine is formed by a series of bones or vertebrae, which are largely responsible for the ability to move and flexibility that these animals have.
Vertebrates are classified into five major groups: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Each of these groups has unique traits and adaptations that allow them to survive and thrive in different environments.
Pisces
Fish are the oldest vertebrates and account for most of the diversity of this subphylum. They are aquatic, breathe through gills and most have scales that protect their skin. Fish are divided into three main groups: bony fish, cartilaginous fish, and agnathan (jawless fish).
Amphibians
Amphibians are the first vertebrates to make the transition from aquatic to terrestrial life. They go through a metamorphosis stage, where the individual changes from an aquatic larval form to a terrestrial adult form. Examples of amphibians include frogs, salamanders, and caecilians.
Reptiles
Reptiles are terrestrial vertebrates that have keratinized scales or plates, a three-chambered heart (except birds), and hard-shelled eggs. They include animals such as turtles, lizards, snakes and crocodiles.
Birds
Birds are the only vertebrates with feathers, a characteristic that allows them to fly. They have a four-chambered heart and hard-shelled eggs. Birds vary greatly in size, from the tiny hummingbird to the enormous ostrich.
Mammals
Mammals are characterized by having mammary glands that produce milk to feed their young. They also have fur or hair and a four-chambered heart. This group includes a diversity of animals, from mice and bats to elephants and whales.
Understanding vertebrate biology is crucial to understanding the complexity and diversity of life on Earth. Each group of vertebrates plays an important role in the ecosystems they live in, contributing to the health and balance of the planet.
We hope that this chapter of our Enem Biology e-book will provide you with a clear and detailed understanding of vertebrates. Studying and understanding this topic will not only help you do well on the ENEM, but also help you appreciate the incredible diversity and complexity of life on Earth.
