Page 38 | Listen in audio
Welcome to chapter 14.9 of our basic level Korean course. In this segment, we are going to cover a crucial aspect of Basic Korean Grammar: Basic Questions and Answers. Let's start with the basic questions that are the backbone of any conversation.
In Korean, the question structure is slightly different from the structure in English. The question is usually constructed by putting the particle '-니까' or '-ㅂ니까' at the end of the sentence. For example, "Did you eat?" would be "밥 먹었니까?" (bab meogeossnikka?).
Another common way of asking questions is using the particle '-ㄹ까요' or '-을까요', which is more formal. For example, "Shall we eat?" could be "우리 밥 먹을까요?" (uri bab meogeulkka yo?).
Now, let's learn some basic questions in Korean. "How are you?" is "어떻게 지내세요?" (eotteoke jinaeseyo?). "What is your name?" is "이름이 무엇입니까?" (ireumi mueosimnikka?). "Where do you live?" is "어디에 살아요?" (hate sarayo?). "Do you speak Korean?" is "한국어를 할 수 있습니까?" (hangugeoreul hal su issseubnikka?).
Answers in Korean also have their quirks. In general, the answer follows the same structure as the question, but without the question particle at the end. For example, to the question "Did you eat?", the answer would be "Yes, I ate" which in Korean would be "네, 밥 먹었습니다" (ne, bab meogeotseumnida).
To answer "How are you?", you could say "I'm fine" which would be "잘 지내요" (jal jinaeyo). "What is your name?" could be answered with "My name is..." which would be "제 이름은 ...입니다" (je ireumeun ...imnida). "Where do you live?" could be answered with "I live in..." which would be "저는 ...에 살아요" (jeoneun ...e sarayo). "Do you speak Korean?" could be answered with "Yes, I speak Korean" which would be "네, 한국어를 할 수 있습니다" (ne, hangugeoreul hal su itsseumnida).
As you can see, Korean grammar has its quirks, but with practice and patience, you can master it. Remember, the key to learning any language is constant practice. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and always try to communicate in the language you're learning, even if it's just a few words or phrases.
We hope this chapter has helped you understand a little more about basic questions and answers in Korean. In the next chapter, we'll explore more about Korean grammar. Until then, keep practicing!
