Editing images on the smartphone has become a common practice, thanks to the evolution of image editing applications. This chapter of our guide will cover five basic image editing features that you can use on your smartphone to perfect your photos. These features are: cropping and rotating, adjusting brightness and contrast, applying filters, adjusting saturation and color, and removing blemishes.

Cut and Rotate

The first basic image editing feature is cropping and rotation. These are simple but powerful tools that can drastically change the appearance of an image. Cropping allows you to remove unwanted parts of the image, while rotation can adjust the angle of the image to make it more attractive.

To crop an image, you typically select the crop tool, drag the edges of the crop box to include only the parts of the image you want to keep, and then commit the edit. Rotation is usually as simple as selecting the rotation tool and dragging to rotate the image to the desired angle.

Brightness and Contrast Adjustment

The next basic image editing feature is brightness and contrast adjustment. Brightness affects the amount of light in the image, while contrast controls the difference between the lightest and darkest colors.

By adjusting brightness and contrast, you can make a dark image appear brighter, or a washed-out image appear more vibrant. Most image editing apps have sliders that let you adjust brightness and contrast until you find the right balance.

Filter Application

Filters are a quick and easy way to change the overall look of an image. They can add a certain tone or effect to the image, such as a vintage, black and white look, or a soft glow. Most image editing apps have a variety of predefined filters that you can apply with a single tap.

While filters can be fun to use, it's important not to overdo it. A well-chosen filter can enhance an image, but excessive use of filters can make the image look artificial or overdone.

Saturation and Color Adjustment

Another basic image editing feature is saturation and hue adjustment. Saturation controls the intensity of colors in the image. Increasing saturation will make colors appear more vivid, while decreasing saturation will make colors appear softer.

Color adjustment allows you to change the color balance of the image. You can adjust the colors to make the image warmer (redder) or cooler (bluer), depending on the desired effect. Like brightness and contrast, saturation and hue are usually adjusted using sliders.

Removal of Imperfections

The last basic image editing feature we'll cover is removing blemishes. This is a useful tool to remove blemishes, scratches or other small defects from the image.

To remove a blemish, you typically select the blemish removal tool, tap the area you want to correct, and the app automatically fills the area with pixels from surrounding areas. It's like a small image editing miracle!
