What you need in shops vs. convenience stores
Shopping Japanese is less about perfect grammar and more about fast, repeatable patterns: (1) identify the item, (2) ask price/size/color, (3) confirm quantity with counters, (4) handle checkout questions (bag, points card, heating). Staff will often speak in short set phrases. Your goal is to recognize the cue and answer with a simple, polite response.

Keep it short: item + どこですか.

Returns and exchanges (what to say, what to expect)
Returns vary by store and item. The most useful Japanese is: state what you want (exchange/return), show the receipt, and give a simple reason. Keep it factual.

Counters you’ll hear at checkout (functional, not academic)
In stores, staff may repeat your quantity using a counter. You don’t need to produce perfect counters every time, but recognizing them helps you confirm: “Yes, that’s right.”
