Welcome to our entry-level Korean course. In this chapter of our e-book, we are going to learn about seasons and weather in Korean. This is an important topic as weather and seasons are an integral part of everyday life and are therefore often mentioned in everyday conversations.
In Korea, as in most countries, there are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In Korean, spring is '봄' (Good), summer is '여름' (Yeoreum), autumn is '가을' (Gaeul) and winter is '겨울' (Gyeoul). Each season has its own characteristics and associated cultural events.
'봄' (spring) in Korea is characterized by cherry blossoms in full bloom. It is a time of year when many cherry blossom festivals take place across the country. During '여름' (summer), Korea experiences a period of heavy rainfall known as '장마' (Jangma). This is followed by extreme heat and high humidity. '가을' (Autumn) is famous for the changing colors of the leaves and is considered by many to be the most beautiful season in Korea. The '겨울' (winter) is cold and snowy, especially in the northern region of the country.
Now, let's learn some words and phrases related to the weather. In Korean, the word for weather is '날씨' (Nalssi). If you want to ask "What's the weather like?", you'd say '날씨가 어때요?' (Nalssiga eottaeyo?). To answer this question, you can use the following expressions: '날씨가 좋아요' (Nalssiga joayo) for "The weather is good", '날씨가 나빠요' (Nalssiga napayo) for "The weather is bad", '날씨가 춥다' (Nalssiga chupda) for "It's cold" and '날씨가 덥다' (Nalssiga deopda) for "It's hot".
In addition, there are specific words for different weather conditions. Rain is '비' (Bi), snow is '눈' (Nun), sunshine is '해' (Hae), cloudy is '흐림' (Heurim), wind is '바람' (Baram), storm is '폭풍' (Pokpung), and fog is '안개' (Angae).
To say it's raining or snowing, you can say '비가 오다' (Biga oda) and '눈이 오다' (Nuni oda), respectively. If you want to say it's sunny, you can say '해가 뜨다' (Haega tteuda). To say it's cloudy, windy, stormy or foggy, you can say '하늘이 흐리다' (Haneuli heurida), '바람이 불다' (Barami buda), '폭풍이 오다' (Pokpungi oda) and '안개가 끼다' (Angaega kkida), respectively.
Knowing the words and phrases related to the weather and seasons in Korean will help you better understand Korean culture and communicate more effectively in Korean.
