4.6 Disassembling and Reassembling a Smartphone: Removing the Motherboard

The disassembly and assembly of a smartphone is a delicate process that requires skill, patience and prudence. One of the most critical components of a smartphone is the motherboard. This is where all the components of the device are connected, including the processor, RAM, internal storage and many other components. Therefore, removing the motherboard is a crucial step in smartphone maintenance.

Preparation

Before you start disassembling your smartphone, make sure you have all the necessary tools. This typically includes a smartphone repair tool kit, which contains several screwdrivers, tweezers, and opening tools. Additionally, it is recommended that you wear an antistatic wrist strap to prevent damage to static-sensitive components.

Smartphone shutdown

The first step in disassembling a smartphone is to turn it off. This is crucial to prevent short circuits and other damage to the device during the disassembly process. Once turned off, remove the SIM card and memory card, if any.

Back Cover and Battery Removal

After that, you can start removing the back cover of your smartphone. This can usually be done with a plastic opening tool or a thin plastic card. Once the back cover is removed, the smartphone's battery is generally visible. If the battery is removable, you can simply take it out. If the battery is non-removable, you will need to disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard.

Motherboard Removal

You are now ready to remove the motherboard. Normally, the motherboard is secured by several screws. Use the appropriate screwdriver from your tool kit to remove these screws. Also, the motherboard can be connected with various ribbon cables. These ribbon cables connect the motherboard to other smartphone components, such as the screen, camera, and buttons. Use tweezers to carefully disconnect these ribbon cables from the motherboard.

After removing all screws and disconnecting all ribbon cables, you can remove the motherboard. Do this carefully to avoid damaging any components. Once the motherboard is removed, you can perform the necessary maintenance or replace it with a new one.

Smartphone Assembly

After completing the maintenance on the motherboard, you can start assembling the smartphone again. This is basically the disassembly process in reverse order. First, put the motherboard back in the smartphone and connect all the ribbon cables. Then put the screws back to secure the motherboard.

After that, reconnect the battery or put the battery back. Then put the back cover back on the smartphone. Finally, insert the SIM card and memory card and turn on the smartphone. If everything was done correctly, the smartphone should turn on normally.
