Self-Defense Basics: Lesson 2 - Fighting Spirit!

It may not be a fancy stance or a fighting stance, but you are ALWAYS in a stance. But is how you are sitting or standing RIGHT NOW putting you in a good position to think, move, and defend yourself or not?

Here's the thing... there’s really no point learning how to punch and kick if you haven’t mastered sitting and standing yet. A tense and crooked body means throwing tense and crooked punches!

So, before you think about mastering strikes, chokes, and submissions... try mastering your posture. Sit up, stand up, and fill the space you were BORN to fill.

I’m going to challenge you to regularly practice sprinting 50 feet or 50 yards. Here's why...

Sprinting powerful. Sprinting also forces your body to work together. And when it comes to self-defense, sprinting is incredibly practical!

Knife? Run. Gun? Run. Bomb? Run.

Seriously, self-defense doesn’t have to be any fancier than a 50-yard dash.

But what if you can't run? That's where shuffling comes in. Being able to move your feet to manage your position is critical to effective offense and defense.

One exercise to help get your feet moving is "fast feet". Just stand naturally and see how fast you can pick up your feet.

Good news! If you ever need to defend yourself, you've got back-up--gravity! Drop your weight and you'll have more power and more options.

Have you never tried to pick up a cranky baby? Even a small creature can be difficult to control when they drop their weight and move all over the place.

So, don’t just think of fighting as pushing and pulling on a horizontal plane, also consider moving on a vertical plane, rising and dropping.

Here are four exercises to help you develop your ability to drop your weight and drive it.

FROG STRETCH. Drop like a frog as low as you can and make yourself comfortable. This is a great way to loosen up your hips and your lower back.

STANCE SQUATS. Take your defensive stance from Lesson #3 and lower your body, bending your knees and keeping

Some thoughts from Lesson #6...

When should you fight back? Nobody can tell you that! The choice is yours and yours alone. No two self-defense situations are exactly the same and even if they were, nobody is you.

Having said that, there are three situations when I would highly recommend that you do choose to fight back--

First, if anybody tries to tie you up. That takes away your option to fight back.

Second, if the bad guy tries to move you to a “secondary location". If you’re going to fight back, make a stand where you’re standing.

Third, as a rule, the more attackers you face, the less effective your words are

If you can’t escape a physical threat, the most effective method of self-defense is OFFENSE-- attacking the attack. Why?

Because bad guys expect you to try and get away from them. They don’t expect you to move closer. So, throw your attacker a surprise party they’ll never forget-- get in his space and in his face.

STEP 1: Find a wall. Try to push it down as hard as you can. Use your hands, elbows, shoulders, and even your head!
